In today’s society, most relationships rely on technology for communication. The theme of relationships and how successful or not successful they end up being are shown in The Lobster and Her. In The Lobster, there is a lack of emotional connection and in Her there is a lack of physical connection. The two films express that a healthy and successful relationship requires both a strong emotional and physical connection. Spike Jonze displays through his film, Her, that relationships built from technology can be negative and harm how healthy the relationship is.

In the movie Her, Theodore’s friends would ask him about his girlfriend, Samantha, and when they would be able to meet her. It became a little uncomfortable for them when they found out that she is an operating system and has no body so they would not meet her physically. Since Samantha is not a real person it made the relationship quite difficult. He never saw what she looked like because she had no appearance, just an extremely high intelligence and eventually learned to develop feelings. Psychology Today states that texting, for example, is not always a healthy way to communicate because it is not a true face to face conversation: “…individuals begin to feel an overdependence, such that texting is preventing them from other activities…or even seeing each other in person…the outcome is dissatisfaction” (DiDonato). Technology can also have a positive impact on relationships. Texting and calling one another can help with making arrangements and quick conversations. Psychology Today states that “texters have some time to think and carefully craft clever messages” (DiDonato). It can help people who need more time to think about what they need to say in response to something. Social media is used everyday in today’s society. Not just teenagers, but adults can use it just as much. If someone is having a hard time meeting people, they might use an online dating website. Dating websites help someone find a similar person to go on a date with based on their interests. An article from Pewresearch explains how even though people might find it hard to believe that online dating sites could be effective, “23% of Americans agree with the statement that “people who use online dating sites are desperate”—but in general it is much more culturally acceptable than it was a decade ago” (Smith).
