The Leviathan was a work of literature that contributed to society in many ways. It had more negatives than positives. But it is still remembered as a very important work of literature in western civilization. Thomas Hobbes wrote this as a radical description on how he believes society should be run.
Thomas Hobbes was born in 1588 to the deputy of Westport and Wiltshire England. Hobbes lived in fear his whole life. He was prematurely born because his mother was stressed about the Spanish armada. He said that he came into this world because of fear and because of that, he lived his life through fear. He graduated from college when he was nineteen. After he took a tour of Europe, he started to have an interest in history. His first work was a translation of History of the Peloponnesian War in 1629. He did this to send a message to the people of England about the dangers of the democracy in England. In 1640, Hobbes wrote a manuscript that said that the monarchy was the royal prerogative. There was a lot of negativity arising from this manuscript. The royalists said that Royal power came only from God and the anti-royalists said his work was encouraging absolute royalty. Hobbes also wrote De Cive, De Corpore, De Homine and he translated famous works such as The Odyssey and The Iliad.

... when there are no rules, there is no justice in that world. “If a covenant be made wherein neither of the parties perform presently, but trust one another, in the condition of mere nature upon any reasonable suspicion, it is void”(Hobbes 3). I completely agree with this statement. If no one abides in a covenant then it is pointless and should be voided. The nature of justice comes from valid covenants. Covenants are kept valid by fear of higher power punishing those that break it.
The Leviathan caused a lot of commotion to the people of Europe. This one document made Thomas Hobbes famous but it also made him hated by majority of the people. Creating a society ruled by the Leviathan was his major idea. Thomas Hobbes was very persuasive with his arguments and his life story about fear definitely explains why society and the government are a major concern for him.
