Working in an interdisciplinary team, gives the team an ability to address the patients’ needs from different perspectives and different strategies. The interdisciplinary team works together to provide the individual with the most beneficial possible outcome. Interdisciplinary teams can include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social workers, and other health care providers (Mellor, Cottrell, & Moran, 2013). She schedules her appointments based upon what she needs to be done throughout the day. Depending upon when she wants time with her family, she may choose to do her paperwork in the afternoon between each appointment. This involves the same thing with her appointments. Therefore, if people are not good at time managing, they should not go into physical therapy, which is really time consuming(Vaughn).
The therapeutic aspect is focussed on the care received, and how it creates a positive outcome for the service user, this includes good communication, building strong relationships, person centred planning and the choices available to the person in receipt of care. Occupational therapy was founded by many different professionals with different backgrounds, that came together to share the same idea about how occupational therapy should be and the importance of activites for a person. This article also talks about different types of services that occupational therapy offers. Occupational therapists and assistances can work in many different settings. With the variety of settings a therapist and assistance can work in, the services that are offered there are different. Some different services that can be offered at these settings can include community mobility skills, stress management, alternative routines and habits, and more. Generally, in a LTC setting there is a director, assistant director, physician, pharmacist, nurses, medication aides, certified nursing assistants, case managers, social workers, and clergy. These individuals are tasked with providing a daily health plan for long-term care residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This group could consist of less or more healthcare associates which is conditional and determined by the goal plan; moreover, the intended outcome not solely geared towards physical rehabilitation. While being able to financially support myself one day still motivated me, I began to appreciate the importance of physical independence as well. I never want to be physically limited and unable to do the things that make me happy, such as snowboarding or kayaking, and I also want to remain independent into old age. This reinforced my desire to pursue physical therapy because I want the opportunity to help others achieve this same kind of freedom that will improve their quality of life. In the book, it states “The goal of therapy is to improve an individual’s functioning in the world” (Kavar 27), by having medical practitioners focus on this it presents a view to broaden the therapeutic work done on patients. This helps corporates towards spiritual dimension, which is described and interpreted as the need for: meaning, purpose and fulfillment in life; hope/will to live; belief and faith (Kavar 8). Followed by the generic and spiritual occupations, which are: abundance, function, balance, and justice (Lloyd & O’Connor 169). As the spiritual dimension is important for the attainment of an overall sense of health, well-being and quality of life (Ross 453). Lloyd and O’Connor agrees upon the spiritual dimension statement given by Kavar by stating, “Dimension of spirituality assist individuals in discovering meaning and purpose in their lives, which is important aspect of the occupational therapy process” (171). Incorporating this practice into mainstream health would definitely help patients future success in recovery and progress. The question that comes to mind when thinking about physical therapy is, “How does one chose the path of physical therapy?” Physical therapy is emotionally and physically demanding and the progress of a patient, depending on their situation, typically moves slowly. Nonetheless, people who find it rewarding are very happy with their choice of career. The thought of making an improvement in peoples’ lives is an important quality to have for those who would like to enter into the field.
Hiring a CTRS, has its benefits. Therapeutic recreation (TR) compares to PT, OT since there is an overlay in some treatments that are used for healing. Physical Therapy Web (n.d.), states that occupational therapy focuses on a person’s functional abilities, and does not directly treat a person’s injury using techniques such as manual therapy like PTs administer. OT’s mainly focuses on improving life skills and incorporating adaptive tools at times. In this paper, I am going to discuss TR as a profession, my personal philosophy of TR, the critical issues that are facing the profession, my perspective on how to address these issues and my professional - personal agenda for the TR profession.
According to Zweigenthal et al. (2009:238), rehabilitation is the type of care given to patients with long term complications where health professionals enhance human functioning or assist with patients whose daily tasks are limited due to their bodily or mental impairment. It is common to think that rehabilitation only focuses on the patient’s physical wellbeing but the other main aspect of rehabilitation is helping the patient adjust to their environment with their health related impairment. When deciding that physiotherapy was my choice of study, I wanted to experience a long term relationship with my patients that rehabilitation professions could offer. Physiotherapy is such a rewarding profession, as you share the patient’s journey to recovery through many follow up sessions. In the future I fear that I may struggle to draw that professional line and I will constantly remind myself not to get too comfortable with my patients. I don’t think that will be too much of a concern once I’m a practicing physiotherapist as Mrs X shared that she had a similar fear in first year. Physical therapist also provided therapeutic services to patients after they have gone through surgery to help them gain back mobility and manage their pain. They can also work in preventive care by promoting healthy life styles and instructing individual patients or groups on preventing injury by using exercises that stretch and strengthen muscles. To help their patients try to recover they use massage techniques, wellness plans, and different types of equipment. When a physical therapist sees a patient for the very first time they must do an examination, evaluation, diagnosis, and then put together a physical intervention to start the rehabilitation process. They also work as a team with other health care professionals to help with their patients needs. Physical therapist can really make a difference in their patient’s lives by not only providing therapeutic services but also encouraging and motivating them so they can get better. The main goals of physical therapist are to help their patients retain or gain back lost physical mobility, eliminate or reduce pain, increase productivity and help promote a healthy life style so patients can have a better quality of life and become more independent.
