Rhetorical Analysis on the Legacy of Antigay Discrimination “The Legacy of Antigay Discrimination” comes from the book Why Marriage? The History Shaping Today's Debate over Gay Equality. It was written by George Chauncey, and published by basic books in 2004. In this chapter, Chauncey highlights some of the systematic oppression and discrimination that homosexuals faced. Chauncey does this to shed light on the fact that people never noticed the harsh extent of discrimination that homosexuals dealt with in the past. Chauncey tells us that bars that had a decent amount of homosexual customers, or “gay bars” were constantly raided by police, which led to their inevitable closure. Chauncey writes that these bars were considered “a gathering place for homosexuals and degenerates who conduct themselves in an indecent manner.” Chauncey continues to build his credibility by using specific examples of homosexual mistreatment. Chauncey writes that in 1958, an “initial investigation of the University of Florida resulted in the dismissal of fourteen faculty and staff members. Chauncey informs us that teachers were being fired based on their sexual preference, and students were also dropping out because of it. Chauncey explains how the government used systematic methods to weed out homosexuals that worked for the federal government. Chauncey states that in 1953 President Eisenhower banned homosexuals from government employment.
