Consent and Sexual Relations
Many of the predicaments that come from sexual relations lead back to the issue of consent. There are certain conditions that must be met for consent to be given in sexual relations. These conditions are needed in order to prevent unfortunate situations such as unwanted sex, and sexual assault. The conditions are as follows: 1. All people involved must be competent to make the decision to engage in a sexual encounter, 2. All people involved must have enough information to make the decision to engage in a sexual encounter, 3. All people involved must be free from any type of duress. The issue of consensual sex is commonly brought up when there is a type of doubt about whether both people engaging in a sexual activity want it to happen, this “doubt” comes from the people involved not being well informed about their own sexual wants and needs. In order to give informed consent all parties involved need to understand their own sexual needs as well as the others’. For example, all parties involved need to understand what he or she are looking for in a sexual encounter. Whether it is because he or she cares about the other, or because he or she wants sexual pleasure. Understanding those needs helps give out informed consent. It will also allow all people involved to be respectful to each other. The key to pleasurable sex for everyone involved is to know that he or she are enthusiastic as each other. If someone is not sure, or they are not sure if it feels right, then they should not keep engaging in a sexual act.
Someone may argue that a young individual who has yet to experience certain aspects of life such as being in a sexual relationship, or knowing what their sexual needs might be can also give valid consent. The people who would dispute this may believe that the only requirement for consent is just to simply say “yes.” There is no depth in their decision to have sex, because they are not taking into consideration as to …show more content…

To put it simply, duress is an action such as a threat, violence, brought to bear on someone to do something against his or her will or better judgment. Giving consent out of fear it is not a valid form of consent due to the fact that the person(s) involved made that decision against their will due to being under duress. For example, if a person agrees to take part in sexual activity due to fear of violence if he or she refuses to perform a sexual act. Other forms of invalid consent are when consent is given due to force, threats or sexual fraud. To commit sexual fraud is to lie or be deceitful in order to engage in a sexual activity. For example, if someone agrees to have sex if a condom is being used to prevent pregnancy and the partner involved pokes a hole in the condom so it will not` fulfill its purpose.
Some may argue that consent given under the influence of someone who is in a position of authority over an individual constitutes valid consent. For example, a person agrees to sexual activity with his employer because she threatens to fire him if he or she refuses. Clearly, this is not a form of valid consent due to the fact that the decision was made under duress, which goes against my third
