The internet is a network system to join computers worldwide, and was developed for a U.S. government project to improve military preparedness (Smith, 2002). Several inventions have changed the way people communicate with each other. From the old fashioned telegraph to today 's modern communication technology, people tend to create easier ways to correspond. Today’s communication technologies, such as e-mail and other internet chat programs, have created a cheap and incredibly fast communications system which is gaining steady popularity. Technologies, such as computers and the Internet, have become tangled in young people 's lives. “According to the Kaiser report, in 2004, 74% of 8-year olds to 18-year olds in the United States had Internet …show more content…
As the Internet has become vital in the lives of young people, their online activities and interactions have become the focus of intense research. For youth, the negative impacts of the Internet include Internet addiction as well as online risks such as cyber bullying. On the other hand, Internet has become a boon for kids. It’s only because of Internet technology that children with disabilities can learn easily unlike the older days. It is becoming evident that the Internet presents risks as well as opportunities to youth, therefore it’s necessary to discuss about both perspectives of internet on …show more content…
There is evidence that Internet addiction has a negative effect on academics (a drop in grades), family relations (having to hide their excessive Internet use from parents), physical health (sleep deprivation due to long hours of Internet use), mental health (depression), and finance (cost of accrued Internet expenses) (Chou, Condron, and Belland 2005). Online gaming and chatting are enjoyable same as any other leisure activities that do not always lead to Internet addiction. However, some evidence suggest that frequency of computer use such as playing games decreases the quality of friendships and romantic relationships, and can have a negative effect on academics (Wainer 2008). One of the most common forms of harassment among youth is cyber bullying. The following was the result of the survey taken by Ybarra and Mitchell on 10- to 15-year-old kids who have used the Internet at least once in the last 6 month in 2008. “Fifteen percent of all of the youth reported an unwanted sexual solicitation online in the last year; 4% reported an incident on a social networking site specifically. Thirty-three percent reported an online harassment in the last year; 9% reported
The whole world is connected by technology. Over time, technology has advanced from payphones and typewriters to cellphones and computers. The progression from a gray-screened cellular device to an advanced smartphone allows easier accessibility. So the question is whether or not the Internet or online technology is affecting the way we read long texts. In my opinion, I agree with Nicholas Carr, who states that "our hyperactive online habits are damaging the mental faculties we need to process and understand lengthy textual information.”
According to Li, O’Brien, Snyder, and Howard (2016), problematic internet use may lead to serious psychosocial dysfunction and has resulted in a proposed diagnostic criterion for the DSM-5 in order to assess the disorder. In the United States, 6% to 11% of internet users are problematic internet users. Researchers, in fact, compare problematic internet use to the assessed criteria for gambling and internet gaming disorder. They have also concluded that college-aged teens and young adults are at most risk due to the availability of internet access around them and the direct relationship between the internet and education. Symptoms include impaired physical health such as obesity or sleep disorders, psychological distress, and behavioral problems. Students may also experience more interpersonal problems and worse school and work performance.
In recent findings 75% of Europeans use the internet (Livingstone and Haddon, 2009) and 65% of the teenagers’ have a Face book or My Space account (Lenhart et al, 2008). Children find that having these accounts is a place for them to meet new people and have a feeling that they belong, and to expand their friendships, but it is also a place for pedophiles to attack especially because it is so easy to manipulate who, how and whey they want, this is where a parent needs to gain control and talk with their children about what can happen on these sties and watch for any warning signs that may appear example maybe their child is acting differently or they ask to meet someone that the parent has never heard about before, looking on computer and viewing what sites the child has entered are ways to catch these instances’ early. Research suggested that 25% of victims are boys who are gay or that are unsure of their sexuality and most of the offenders are
In the first essay, What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow up in Cyberspace by Brent Staples, there were several interesting points made about whether technology helps or harms our everyday lives. Social networking has increased the ability to socialize with people all around the world in a revolutionary way. Being able to access so many social oriented websites, it has helped advance our connections by allowing the elderly who had been isolated before they gained access to the web. However, even though it has increased the potential of communicative opportunity, it has also brought some harmful reality to light. While increasing the connections of the elderly, research shows that it is beginning to isolate the younger generations. The youth of today are losing the
According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, about 93% of kids aged 12 to 17 go online, with 73% of these teens using social media such as Facebook or Myspace" ( Barker, 2014, p.1).With the advancement of the internet and person to person communication sites, it is inconceivable for anybody to disregard the internet. The way that internet has affected everyone's normal life is beyond imagination. However, the impact that the web has the most on is teenagers. Teenagers consider the internet as the best form of communication. In spite of the positive attributes that the internet offers, there are some negative influences that parents must be mindful of.
Living in the 21st century means dealing with technology every day. Constantly kids, teens, and students alike use the internet for homework, games, and just to stay connected on social media. Mild to severe depression is likely in younger people who are addicted to the internet. Internet addiction is excessive computer use that gets in the way of daily life. Internet addiction was not even recognized as a problem until the mid-1980s when psychologist Ivan Goldberg proposed it as a hoax. (Qiaolei) People who are addicted to the internet would rather play games, chat in online communities, and view pornographic websites than actually meeting and socializing with real people face to face. Some people who spend an extra amount of time online might not even notice their absence from social interactions and signs of depression might sneak up on them. People who are experiencing depression from the internet use the internet to “self-medicate” which is the same as someone abusing alcohol or other drugs to treat a disorder. (Wilson) Some signs of internet caused depression include difficulty concentrating, insomnia, irritability, and loss of interest in activities or hobbies that were once enjoyable. The internet is becoming a necessity of most people lives. Balancing the online world and real life is important in maintaining relationships and avoiding
The Internet Has a Negative Impact on American Families Does the Internet truly have a negative impact on today’s family life? Many say that most definitely does. Have you ever known someone who is obsessed with the Internet or spends more time on the Internet than they had intended to? You might begin to think they are addicted. Ricco Siasoco defines Internet addiction as “a broad term including users addicted to chat rooms, auctions, web surfing, among others.”
Technology has advance so much since the old days. We see technology everywhere but one major thing that has change since back then into now has been the internet usage. Believe it or not internet is being used everywhere. First, it was used in desktops now is on laptops, cellphones, and tablets and even on TV and Video games. Internet, is very bad for society but three major reasons why is bad is due to many deaths, creating health issues, and bullying.
The internet that society knows today, was once a very small concept that only a few people could grasp. It started out very small, but over time it grew to become so popular among people, that it became a household term. Computers were becoming more conventional and many more people started being able to afford them. There was a major growth of internet users across the world. Due to the demand of technology being used, the internet had created a new way to perform simple tasks and go about activities. It had initiated a ...
Kershaw provides an example of the negative effect of Internet addiction in the article “Hooked on the Web: Help is on the Way”. Mike is a 34 year old man who addresses his Internet addiction problem and seeks treatment. Before seeking treatment, Mike struggled with alcohol and drug abuse and depression along with Internet addiction. He often spent countless hours using the computer to search news and sports information. He never felt it was a problem because he liked it so much and used it in his everyday life. However, Internet addiction started to impact Mike’s life. He became unemployed and lived with his mother. It also affected his social interaction; he would rather be on the computer than be around other people (Kershaw). Another case where computer addiction is found to be a problem is in some Asian countries. Elizabeth Cooney, in her article “Some People Need Help To Kick Their Internet and Computer Gaming Obsessions” reports that “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in girls and hostility in boys can predispose children to later Internet addiction, which they estimate affects 4 percent of children in Korea and 15 percent in China.” Furthermore, there have been reports of death due to Internet addiction as well. In Korea, a man died because he did not perform basic survival skills such as eating and sleeping for 50 hours due to his Internet addiction (Cooney). In the article “Computer
A report shows that 72% of internet users were cyberbullied at least once in a one year period (Juvonen and Gross 502). One article cites as of June 2006 that 713 million individuals who age 15 and older used the Internet with 153 million users being American (“Microsoft”). However a more recent study conducted by Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation in 2010 shows that “ 93% of children ages 8 to 18 have computers at home, 66% have cell phones, and 76% own another multimedia device” (Holladay 5). All this data points to more users being connected to the internet is taking away from traditional forms of bullying; from playground teasing to in school harassment. Now, youths can take and post pictures and videos in minutes and not just the surrounding audience would know about the bullying but the whole world can view what is going on.
Similarly, 1 in 33 children have been involved in an aggressive interaction, and 1 in 17 have been threatened or harassed (Bremer 420). Considering how susceptible kids are to predators, the Internet is clearly not a safe environment for kids to be on all the time. Aside from the social effects of the Internet, there are many mental health effects as a result of the overuse of the Internet. Numerous people praise the Internet and its ability to educate young people. More and more schools are switching to online learning to help children academically.
Ten years ago, the Internet was practically unheard of by most people. Today, the Internet is one of the most powerful tools throughout the world. The Internet is a collection of various services and resources. The Internet’s main components are E-mail and the World Wide Web. Actually, there’s a lot more to the Internet than E-mail, search engines, celebrity web sites, up-to-the-second sports scores, and chat rooms full of discussions. The Net also ranks as one of today’s best business tools. Almost all households contain the Internet; however, before people connect to the Internet, they need to be aware of its disadvantages and advantages.
For the past decade or two, Internet is a channel that promotes an access to information and communication in the global world. It is one of the most powerful tool. Now-a-days, an access to the internet has become easier than ever, whether we are using a computer, phone or tablets. There is no doubt that people are spending more and more time online. Because many people use the internet for their career and education, it is hard to differentiate between the normal usage and excessive usage of the internet. We all use web at a normal level, but when it becomes compulsory for survival it becomes an addiction.
The internet has influenced, and is still influencing the way society communicates in many different ways. The rise of the internet has caused people to communicate differently in areas never dreamed of before the internet came into existence. Education has been revolutionized through the world of the “Information Super Highway”. Medicine has also seen reform as the internet improves research and communication. Individuals are starting businesses from scratch, while others are selling household items for extra cash. This internet “typhoon” sweeping the globe has become a way of life for many individuals all across the globe.
