The two Books that I will be comparing and contrasting are: “The Interlopers” (Saki) and “The Story of the Hour” (Kate Chopin). They are both Very simular, which is why I chose to compare and contrast these two. In the story “The Interlopers” 2 men had hated each other since childhood, and now they are trying to kill each other. So they both desire to try to hunt each other in the woods in the middle of the night. They both pray and lightning would strike a tree and land on the other person so that they could find them and kill them. Buuuuuuuuut… What ends up happening is they find each other and a tree falls on them both. Now, it does not kill them, but it does badly injure them both. The two stories take place in a sacred room of the house and both transpire in a brief amount of time. The differences between the two stories are seen through the author’s choice of characters in each story. In “The story of an Hour” Kate Chopin involves other characters in Mrs. Mallard’s life, whereas, “The Hand” deals with marriage and togetherness and only involves the husband and wife. Symbolism is seen all throughout “The Hand” not so in ‘The Story of an Hour.” The similarities in “The Story of an Hour” and “The Hand” is portrayed in theme and setting. The differences are illustrated in the choice of characters involved in each story and the amount of symbolism depicted in the different stories.

Her story brings light to a fact that is fairly accepted by today's society, but was shunned during her time. Life before this time demanded that women should get married due to necessity. Most of America was still rural and women were needed to do certain task on the farm. When industrialization came along though, things became simpler, cities grew, and there were more choices for people to do. Women were not tied down on the farm any more. Her story shows one woman's chance to be what she wanted to be and not be looked down upon in her society. Chopin gives light on women having more freedom to do what they wanted to do in regards to marriage.
