In the history of American Literature until 1870 the focus of the literature as well as elements used was constantly changing. In The Interesting Narrative of Oluadah Equiano we see the us of persuasive elements and a focus on a group of people. In The Crucible the usage of characters and their motivations is used as well as the focus being on both the group and the individual.
