Leonardo had a very unfortunate childhood, but as he grew older, his life changed and he became very successful. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was born in Vinci, Italy on April 15, 1452 to a poor family with 17 other siblings. His mother, Catherina, was a peasant girl and did all she could to support her family. His father, Ser Piero, was a selfish painter that refused to marry Catherina because he did not want to share his wealth. Young Leonardo was extremely interested in books that were provided by his family and friends. At the age of 15, Da Vinci’s intelligence was exhibited in his extremely realistic and detailed paintings. Verrocchio, a master painter at that time decided to end his painting career because Leonardo was more skilled than him. Leonardo, however, became Verrocchio’s apprentice for 3 years until he considered that he should begin selling his paintings in order to make money. Leonardo then moved to work for the Duke of Milan, which he worked for 17 years, where he designed hundreds of inventions, anatomic sketches, building designs and more. Da Vinci wanted to dig deeper in his studies, so he bought similar body parts from butcher shops and he dissected them, because he believed that humans animals are similar. Da Vinci also studied the development of the unborn child and recorded every stage of a fetus. Finally, Da Vinci drew detailed drawing of the human skeletal system, which were astonishing due to the absence of technology. Leonardo Da Vinci was extremely talented, because his achievements were immensely ahead of his time, because it would be exceptionally difficult for today’s doctors to make the same observations as Da Vinci without using complex instruments.
