War back then was much more honorable and noble than war in today’s time. In those times, war had such an outstanding influence on society and its' culture because war was what they lived for. Children were raised to grow up and fight for their countries. There was so much honor in fighting and dying for your country. On the other hand, today's soldiers are sent into war just for economic gain. Beowulf felt so much pride in war and fighting to defend his town from his only son.
In Beowulf war is one of the main themes, where the author glorifies wars and battles. He portrays them as heroic and honorable events. When I read this story, it seems that in their society, bloodshed and war is a way of life which was a dominant characteristic of this culture and was the only form of justice available. Battles are portrayed as signs of heroism. Beowulf, further supports this. He proves that he is a hero through courage and victory. He defeats enemy tribes, monsters galore, Grendel and his mother and in the end the dragon. His success in warfare and glory in battle obtains him respect and allows him to become a good leader. Having war for the gain of money and economic profit is wrong. War causes unnecessary life loss and destruction. However, even in certain situations war might cause major problems between countries caught in the crossfire. That could lead to more pointless losses and deaths. War was essential in Anglo Saxon time for men to assert their dominance and prove their worth in this world. They were taught not to be manipulated by their leaders, they were telling them to go fight for a good cause when it's just for the gain of the powerful and elite.
