One very notable artist to follow in Leonardo Da Vinci’s footsteps in the High Renaissance was Raphael (Adams, p. 312). In 1483 the artist known as Raphael was born Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino Italy; a walled city built on a sloping hillside in the Marche region of Italy (Encyclopedia of Arts Education, n.d; Encyclopedia Britannica, 2016). Recognized as a World Heritage site for its true Renaissance architecture, the city would also lure many an artist inside and scholars inside its walls during the 15th century (UNESCO, 2017; Encyclopedia Britannica, 2016). Once in Florence, Raphael learned more and became even more experienced in art and painting (Kren & Marx, 1996). He was largely influenced by the Italians works in painting such as the Fra Bartolommeo, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Masaccio (A & E, 2017). These artists were highly acclaimed and gained a great deal of experience in art and painting. To Raphael, this became a learning opportunity. Every destination along the way gave him the opportunity to develop his talents. Even history cannot point to one specific place as Raphael’s footstool to his career, passion and success. The Roman Pope Julius II played a key role in his success, being the Pope at the time gave Raphael commission for various chapels in Rome including the Holly Basilica Cathedral. His apprenticeship for Pietro too, is not the sole reason for his success; neither can we point his success to the Madonna and other influential Italian artists like Da Vinci. Overall, Raphael’s life experience as a child to his influencers as a young adult played a major role in his career, growth and development.
