The most impactful people in history not only influence others in their lives, but grow up knowing that they have a purpose in this world. In this book, The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart, the reader follows the upcoming of Myrddin Emrys, later known as Merlin. As a child, he was not favored by others and often called a bastard because he did not know his father and Niniane, his mother, would not reveal who that individual was. Merlin was rejected by peers, his grandfather, and his uncle, who tries to poison him because he believes Merlin is a threat to his reign as King. However, this event is good because it causes Merlin to learn about himself and essentially create a future king. As a character, Merlin made an impact on the King Arthur legend due to his ability, known as the Sight, Arthur's conception, and his guidance.

Although the novel does not speak of Arthur much besides him being the "Rising Sun", Merlin shaped who Arthur was as a person. After fulfilling his purpose of Arthur's conception, years later he made Arthur a king when he was able to pull the sword from the stone. From that point on, Merlin shared his wisdom with the young prospect. With King Arthur having defeated the Saxons and Merlin by his side, he had a successful reign as ruler.

In conclusion, Merlin had a great impact on the King Arthur legend. A boy, who came from terrible background and childhood, was able to change the lives of many people whether they knew it or not. He overcame many obstacles in his life to create a legacy for not only himself, but for Arthur as well. In the end of the novel, it foreshadowed the upcoming of Arthur by talking about how Merlin saw the King-Star rushing into the light of the rising sun. All in all, Merlin was able to complete his intention and when everything was said and done, he went back where it all started-The Crsytal
