The Scarlet Letter plays a big role in Hester's identity and who she becomes as a person. The Scarlet letter gives her a reputation that does not reflect her character. If Hester were to remove the Scarlet Letter she would be acknowledging that her sin is more powerful than she is. Society gives the Scarlet letter its meaning; it began with adultery and later led to able. However, in Hester’s eyes the letter became a symbol of feminine equality and a reminder of society’s evils.
To begin with, for Hester to remove the scarlet letter would be to acknowledge the power it has in determining who she is. It would have proven to successfully restrict her from becoming a better person. Hester chooses to wear the letter because she wants to change its meaning with her actions. On pg. 144 it states “she made no claim upon it in requital for what she suffered; she did not weigh upon its sympathies” Hester didn’t claim that the public owed her compensation for her suffering.
