The Importance Of The Ghost Map

The book, The Ghost Map, tells the story of the cholera outbreak that took place in England during the medieval era. During this time, London became popular, causing it to become one of the most populous urban cities in England. However, it suffered from overcrowding, a large lower class, and little health regulations. As a result, living conditions and water supply were not the cleanest, and many died from the disease cholera. Though this epidemic led to many deaths/illnesses during it’s time, it has proven to be helpful and important to public health today. Some public health advancements that have occurred as a result include healthier, cleaner, and longer lives lived. During the 1800’s, the lower class of London was so large, it basically formed its own city. With a large population and improper disposal of wastes the city became covered in excrement and rotting food. Because London became so unsanitary, many worked jobs to try and remove some of the waste and make use with what they could. Many of the lower class citizens preformed these unsafe and unsanitary jobs of removing waste in order to try and make or find enough money to survive. I feel that today it is still seen that people of a lower economic

For instance, reading about how the citizens of London lived very uncleanly lives and how that impacted their health makes me want to not only practice healthy habits for myself, but makes me want to promote cleaner living. As a pre-nursing major I have gained more knowledge and awareness about hygiene and sanitation that I can hopefully educate others about. I feel as though education is an important part of public health because educating the public about the harm of poor health practices, can help in preventing things such as the development and spread of diseases such as cholera, which was demonstrated within the
