Sustainability is defined as the ability of a system, be it on a small or large scale, to maintain its way of life in regards to three factors; society, economy, and the environment, for future generations to come. To achieve sustainability, there must be an understanding of how these three factors are linked together, as well as an effort to balance them on many different levels, without any of the three factors degrading over time.
The components of a sustainable society include social programs, education, housing, transportation and the community. By implementing green energy, we can help boost this sector of the economy and create jobs, while simultaneously relieving pressure on finite natural resources such as coal and natural gas (City of Copenhagen, 2014). Increasing the cost of carbon credits for industries and providing tax incentives for implementing renewable energy and other eco-friendly practices could help to spur change in the way people treat the environmental commons, which at the moment are suffering as some stakeholders take more than they give. Sustainability also hinges on environmental stewardship of ecosystems, and reclamation of contaminated sites using environmental services such as phytoremediation and mycoremediation. Grey water recycling from homes and businesses reduces fresh water usage, and can be used to irrigate urban agriculture projects, such as green roofs, green walls, community gardens, and edible forest gardens which in turn provide locally grown food and jobs that help stimulate the local economy. Integration of small livestock such as bees, chickens, rabbits and goats can also help to create environmentally sustainable communities which are less dependent on global agriculture (The Urban Farmer, 2016). One way of improving air quality is promoting cycling, which lowers CO2 emissions, as well as other air pollutants (City of Copenhagen, 2014) from private cars. Programs that offer payments towards an electric vehicle in return for scrapping old gas engine vehicles also help to improve air quality. Preserving biodiversity and habitats such as streams can be achieved by creating a network of natural areas and parks when planning communities, as outlined in Rule #6 of
