Designers have always focused on designing for the visual aestetic and the effecientcy of the function of products. However designers are now using their skills to help eradicate social issues within the world, such as providing lower helth care costs and proper living conditions around the world. Social innovation through design sees to designing for social change (Mulgan, 2006). The 3 sources I have chosen are, The Sternins research on reducing malnutrition in Vietnam, Another was the mosquito nets sent to North Africa to prevent malaria and the third one was Harry wes who designed cheaper disposable nappies for less affluent families in china. Sternin and his wife worked in Vietnam to reduce the amount of malnourished children across …show more content…
This can be an internal battle with most as we live in a consumerist society, however design for social change helps benefit us all as it helps better the world as a whole through small changes. Another factor can be the research methods used, some people may choose to conduct written studied research where as others will empathically conduct research by experiencing the social issues first hand which would be the most efficient way to find a solution to the …show more content…
Tim brown (CEO of IDEO) explained design thinking as “a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer's toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.” (IDEO, 2016). Design thinking makes use of different types of people in different professions and from different understandings to find solutions in problem solving. In social innovation, on needs to go through the process of Design Thinking in order to find a solution to meeting the required neds of the specific issue being dealt with (Mulgan, 2006, pp. 145 – 147). Design is defined as translating an idea into something real. This shows how broad design is and how design is everywhere and in everything. Social innovation through design is basically designing better easier lives for people in need. This means using a different, creative way of thinking to develop ideas for to meet a social need of specific groups of people. Richard Seymour said it plainly “design is making things better for people” and this is basically what Social innovation through design is (What is design, no date, pp. 1 –

Graphic designer and typographer Stefan Sagmeister has always had a unique way of viewing the world, therefore has created designs that are both inventive and controversial. He is an Austrian designer, who works in New York but draws his design inspiration while traveling all over the world. While a sense of humor consistently appears in his designs as a frequent motif, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work. He has created projects in the most diverse and extreme of ways as a form of expression. This report will analyse three of Stefan’s most influential designs, including the motives and messages behind each piece.

One main item that could affect design is the concept of liability. In today’s day and age, organizations are quick to lay blame on an individual instead of looking at process improvement. For example, a manufacturing organization that identifies how to improve processes to avoid/correct seeing defects would strengthen the loyalty of its workers vs. one that identifies individuals to blame. Most new design is reviewed

On page 3 of the Stanford Design School Method, it says that, “It’s not about coming up with the ‘right’ idea, it’s about generating the broadest range of possibilities.” Ideating can help you in the workforce by allowing you to brainstorm. Like we did in a few of our Designing Your Life worksheets we brainstormed a lot of career ideas. We wrote down even ideas that seemed silly to show us that there was no on right answer. We could use this in our job hunting search to show us that there are many jobs and opportunities out there for us.
Drawing on your knowledge of social innovation and organizational form, compare and contrast two organizational forms (e.g association and social movement; company limited by guarantee and coop; hybrid and some ‘pure’ form. Critically evaluate them with regard to their enabling or constraining impact on social innovation. Draw liberally on the relevant literature and illustrate with examples.
A new product on the market may look all shiny and new and be appealing to customers but what is the story behind the product and what is the underlying future for this product. Where were the original materials from? Is it all legalised? Where did the manufacturing take place? How was the product manufactured? These are all questions that are never properly addressed in the design industry and are just simply overlooked. They are the aspects of designing and producing a new product that need to be carefully looked at to make a good design, and to make sustainable products.

Entrepreneurship for social change: Is the U.S. doing enough to encourage and support sustainable social innovation?
‘You cannot hold a design in your hand. It is not a thing. It is a process. A system. A way of thinking.’ Bob Gill, Graphic Design as a Second Language.
In the beginning lectures, I had no idea that brainstorming and conceptualizing an idea was part of an elaborate process to generate good product ideas. Great inspiration and a creative idea require deep thinking. I have learned that opportunity identification involves looking into the problems first rather than diving headfirst into the solution. Identifying and analyzing customer’s needs, market size, sustainability and scalability allows easy identification of low and high potential concepts. As stated in the article by Tim Brown (Brown, 2008), human-centric approach of innovation should be part of the design process as it gives insights into the life of an everyday person.
Innovates by finding a new product, a new service, or a new approach to a social problem.
Understanding all of the steps involved with innovation is essential for an organization to be successful. There are many aspects involved in managing technological innovation. While a technological innovation can help the organization be successful, it is important to consider social responsibility as well. Social responsibility has becoming an increasing more important as society evolves and moves forward. Organizations that desire long term success understand the importance of social responsibility and how it can affect their organization in a positive way, if executed
