Have you ever read a novel that was so appealing that it left you with the interest of writing something similar? Writing a novel is a time-consuming process that requires patience, knowledge and a certain language. However, not all writers known today were born with natural talents. In fact, many had to work on their skills in order to succeed. Although it could be difficult to come up with an idea and express it in words, writing can be easier if you followed certain steps, such as writing a plot, building the characters and making it plausible to anyone who reads it.

In the novel, Bleachers by John Grisham, we witness a disoriented former high school all-star quarterback make a return to his hometown after many years as he tries to figure out the feelings he has for his former Coach. The novel takes place in a small town called Messina, where the biggest events to happen are high school football on a Friday night. Other than Spartan football, the small populated, Messina does not have much going for them besides hearing about the latest news and gossip spread with the locals. Neely Crenshaw is the main character focused in the story. A once high school hero for breaking quarterback records and accumulating wins for the Spartans, decides whether if it is right to keep a grudge or be thankful from his passing coach, Eddie Rake. Eddie Rake is the reason why Spartan football was put on the map. His intense and unorthodox practice turned students into actual Spartans of football. He is also the reason many former Spartan football players have returned, including Neely because he has been in severe condition due to cancer. As the players reminisce on realistic events and moments of state games, they also await for the lights to shut off on Rake’s Field. The believable context of this fictional novel has a convincing setting, theme, characters, and events that make readers believe the possibility in real life.

Where does the beginning come from in every story and what influences the authors to include details and write the way they do? How do they know what to write about when for some the words just do not come? Life experiences, history, family history and events around them in the time are four of some of the biggest reasons authors put their thoughts and feelings on paper.
Although one may not realize it, several aspects work harmoniously in constructing the modern novel. According to Ian Watt, three of these are particularity, unity of design, and rejection of traditional plots. A novel must focus on specific characters and has to occur in a distinct time frame. Furthermore, a novel should have a plot unlike others of the era. One common idea or theme should also rule the work. All of these characteristics are vividly expressed in Oroonoko.
A book is not possible without characters. Stories are given purpose and meaning by their characters, bringing the reader through their struggles and triumphs. The characters are the conduit from which the reader experiences the story in a book. In order to have a successful novel the writer must have a wonderful cast of developed and plausible characters. The keys to writing successful characters and mastering the techniques of character development are: knowing everything about the characters as if they were a real person including traits and appearances, researching how the characters live and their situations, how the characters relates to the plot including rational decision making and the driving forces for the characters, and finally emotional growth of the characters, otherwise known as a character arcs. These aspects will help create characters the reader will never forget, keeping them alive forever.

Growing up as an only child my parents wanted to make sure that I had all of the resources I needed to succeed, one being the ability to read and write. The quote by Dr. Seuss was highly regarded by those who wanted me to succeed in life. They wanted me learn to read and write so that I can know and experience more than they have. At an early age reading and writing was stressed to a high degree, but as I got older reading became a struggle and writing was something that helped relieve that struggle.
The end goal, a journal, that holds such a meaning that even the thought of writing it is frightening. After the two long years of running the race, the end is finally in sight. Every assignment is a beginning to become more meaningful.
