How does one go about making moral decisions? With all the tensions that surround modern life how do we, individually, and as a society make moral choices about issues that will affect our relationship to our neighbor, our community and the world? What goes into making moral decisions which affect our society to help achieve the greatest good for the greatest number of people.

We don’t exist in a vacuum and ethical choices cannot be made in a vacuum. The choices we make are affected by factors such as nationality, social class, education, occupation and, most importantly, our Christian religion. Do we, as Christians, have an advantage over others when wrestling with moral dilemmas? Have we being given extra insight when making moral decisions. I believe we have. We have been given gifts that allow us to delve deeper into the process of ethical decision making. 1.

In John 16:5-15 Jesus promises to send a helper to comfort and counsel us. In John 16, Jesus refers to the spirit as counsellor who will guide us in our everyday lives. The Christian experience is that we are called by God to join in a church where we share in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, among which are prudence and judgment. 6.

Finally the power of prayer! God imparts wisdom and understanding through prayer. If you want to know what God wants you to do just ask him and he will gladly tell you. James 1:5,” If any of you lack wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Availing of God’s counsel is a blessing of prayer. 7.

Ethical dilemmas will always thrive where people choose to live in the tension of what is and what things ought to be. May our Christian faith provide the light needed to find the answers so that whatever we do we do for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians
