The United States has many mediums to offer for entertainment, football being one of them. The aggressiveness of the sport often lands it in the spotlight. Linebackers are one of the most aggressive positions on the field. The linebackers are never the heaviest nor the most athletic people on the field, but in my opinion, they should receive more credit for their responsibilities. This may seem a little biased because I have played the position, but I had to establish a great work ethic to even be able to be a linebacker. Growing up, I could only look up to those who played the position until I was able to become them. A great linebacker comes with expectations of someone to have discipline, mental and physical toughness, and great agility. …show more content…
Linebackers are the most disciplined people on the team because it comes with much more responsibility than any other position.
The linebacker has to not only make big tackles but also has to know where everyone else should be on the field. One simple mistake, no matter whether mental or physical, can cause the player to be in the wrong spot. If the linebacker is not in the proper position this will give the offense a better chance at scoring. The discipline not to guess and to truly understand the game requires great practice. With plenty of keys to stick to, the linebacker cannot afford to have any false moves. Although the eyes of a linebacker should be on the ball carrier, there are other things they have to look for. For example, the linebacker has to be the first to detect whether the offense will run or pass. In the situation that the offense is running the ball, the linebacker has to be sure to stop the runner in his or her tracks, allowing a minimum amount of yards as
possible. As a former linebacker, I learned to block out the offensive players. Playing football taught me how to ignore people who constantly try to disturb my focus. The most vital key mentally for a linebacker that I quickly learned, is that offensive players talk a great amount throughout the course of a game. The mental toughness to refrain from responding to them is sometimes a real challenge. I have always looked at it as the individual really wanting me to tackle or hit them harder. In football to be physically tough is a huge necessity, but a linebacker requires a greater level of toughness. Linebackers have to deal with massive offensive linemen, who are pretty close to three hundred pounds or more; to be more physical than them is strenuous. Although this is manageable, many of them show great agility with quick hands and feet. To be quicker than offensive linemen is not that hard of a task, but to go up against a running back or wide receiver is a little tougher. This level of agility is simple to gain in order to prevent the opponent from scoring or gaining a great amount of yards. Although running backs and wide receivers tend to be quicker, linebackers are able to make huge stops because their agilities are up to par. The ability to fight around the offensive linemen, and still make a play in the backfield, requires some admirable agility. Offensive linemen may have quick feet, but with practice any linebacker can take on this task. Even though linebackers are not always known to be the most outstanding on the field, there are many reasons that they should receive more credit. The ability to stop a runner in his or her tracks is not an effortless task. By having the discipline, physical and mental toughness, and agility can make this position feel manageable. The amount of work required for this position can seem draining, but in the end, I promise there is a reward. Although, the reward may not last a long time, there are skills for life to learn from the position alone.
Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. However, the National Football League (NFL) is in the midst of a controversial issue. Is the NFL getting soft? This has been a debatable issue for several years. While some believe that implementing all these rules in the NFL is progressively turning the game soft, others say that the NFL is not getting soft; it is just trying to make the game safer for its players.
Children who are active recklessly engage in activities where injuries can occur. Nobody can predict when or how seriously anybody will get injured during an activity, however, the risks of children playing tackle football is prevalent where the dangers are imminent. The game of tackle football on a youth level is dangerous for children since they are developing physically and mentally. According to an article from The Atlantic, “America’s most dangerous football is in the peewee leagues, not the National Football League” (Barra, 2013). According to a journal article, “sports injuries account for approximately 23% of pediatric emergency department injury related visits” (Podberesky, Unsell & Anton, 2009). “Of these sports injury-related
Football is an extremely violent game not only in the physical part but also in the mental part of the game. Players are coach to be vicious on the field. they are taught to get mad and take their aggression out on the other player. Which can be dangerous when two or more players are trying to hurt(intentionally or not) the other player by hitting them hard. High school sports are dangerous because rese...
American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. Surprisingly enough, one will find the most passionate football players at the high school level. Most boys will start their football career as a young child in football programs such as Pop Warner to get a foothold and to get those involved in teamwork and friendships. These programs are usually the start to someone falling in love with the sport and making it a career choice eight years later. Football is one of America’s favorite sports. When fall season comes around, people across America are placing bets, finding out where that new sports bar is, and buying wide screen T.V’s to watch NFL on Sundays. After their team plays, they will go out and reminisce what happened that Sunday. While thousands of fans are still pumped from the NFL games they watched; small towns across America are getting ready to shut down their shops and restaurants to have the chance to make it to the local high schools football game. Ray Glier, a reporter for the New York Times, writes about football in the small town of Appala...
II. Summary: Players’ safety should be focused on more by making rules stricter in the NFL, teaching younger players how to tackle, and increasing the rules because helmets do not always prevent concussions.
The National Football League was formed on August 20, 1920. Players wore pads, not quite as protective as the ones today, helmets and legs pads. Even though their protective gear wasn 't all that protective they still made contact with the players of the opposing teams. As the years progressed the league made many changes to the rules due to player safety. They invented better protective gear for the players and they also made more strict rules regarding playing guidelines. The main goal of those rules, like the targeting rule that is so controversial today, is to protect the players. The targeting rule itself states that no player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown of his helmet, when in
I believe that in middle school, it is a necessity for kids to be involved in extracurricular sports to learn knew skills that they can apply on and off the field. Due to budget cuts, more and more schools have had to cut extracurricular sports. I know that I want sports to come back and so do many kids in middle school. Sports will benefit your health and many other aspects that help you become successful.
Football is America’s favorite sport. It is a fast-paced, hard-hitting game. Every week thousands of men and boys all across the country take part in football and every week these men and boys receive violent hits during the game. Frequently, as a result of these violent hits, the player receives a concussion. However, the long-term effects of concussions on players are not fully understood. New research shows that even a slight concussion in a football game can have lasting effects on a player. As a result of this research, children under the age of fourteen should not play tackle football.
How dangerous is high school football? How dangerous is high school football? That’s a question that a lot of coaches get asked. In reality, they can not give a correct answer. Personally I believe that every sport is dangerous but, if you play the correct way it could be safe.
High school football is very risky! There are so many ups and downs about this sport in particular. Many people would say it is dangerous for these young boys to play football though others will have a different outlook on it. Football is truly not that dangerous and it can be very helpful for some boys in various ways including, scholarships, personality and a learning experience.
First of all, the rules of football require one to equip himself with approximately twenty pounds of equipment, including a helmet, shoulder pads, and girdle pads. This is because football has the most contact involved out of all sports. In a football game, the norm is that the home team wears colorful jerseys and the visiting team wears white jerseys. Moreover, if a team’s offense is on the field, their defense is on the sideline. A team’s offense includes a center, who snaps the ball to the quarterback. The “QB” then has a choice to run with the ball, hand it off to a running back, or throw it to a wide receiver. The quarterback has an offensive line to protect him from the assailing defense. If a teammate happens to score a touchdown, he earns his team six points, which allows for the kicker to kick an extra point, and give his team a total of seven points. However, if the offense fails to travel at least ten yards within four attempts, or “downs,” they have the opti...
It was a summer of 2000 during my first year of my high school, the soccer tryouts had just been announced. I was so excited to hear about tryouts, and I couldn’t wait to start playing for my high school soccer team. I met with the soccer coach of the High School team to discuss my interest to become a part of his team. The coach was very impressed after the meeting, he told me he had never met a person that has so much ambition of playing soccer and he couldn’t wait to see me to be a part of his team. I was fully confident in myself that I would make the team and impress the coach in the first soccer tryouts, after a few days had gone by, the physical check-up form had to be filled by a family doctor, and returned before the tryouts. I rushed
Linebackers and lifeguards have the ability to make or breAk a game. It could be the one yard line and the opposing team is about to score and your best linebacker reads the play wrong doesn't fill the right hole the other team just walks in the endzone to win it all or it could be the total opposite and he fills the hole and they win. Like football a lifeguard has the same responsibility except with out a game on the line it's someone's life on the line like a mother father or daughter etc… They have zero for error just like a linebacker and people take that for
Being a running back is the hardest position to play in football. In order to be the best running back like Walton Peyton, the athlete needs to study the playbook, perform speed drills, and practice hard.
The training and practices required to play professional football are intense. You have to wear uncomfortable pads and helmets and endure grueling practices in the heat of the summer and you have to lift weights every day (Green 174). You have to train no matter what position you play. What’s important about is how the position works and how it contributes to the game.
