Education is a tool that can be used for various purposes. Such an experience ought not to be restricted to a structural, schoolroom environment. Undoubtedly, academics are an indispensable element of the evolutionary experience of gaining knowledge; however, the formation of empathy and both communication and self-reflection skills is equally essential.
High school experiences are the culmination of adolescents’ holistic educational enhancement; therefore, community service holds great significance and should be a compulsory component of students’ educational experiences. Some opponents of this view may argue that the prerequisites held by future employers do not include community service. Indeed, such individuals claim that community service further detracts from the time a student spends reviewing course material, and consequently heightening occupational prospects. This, however, is a flawed argument. In an era where professional occupations are fluid in nature (a result of both fiscal insecurity and the current mobile way of existence), the most important skills a student can have are their interpersonal and intrapersonal, or communicative and reflective, skills.
Community service enhances these qualities, providing students with appreciation for and recognition of not only others’ situations, but indeed the capacity to relate to and truly value other humans being “served”. Furthermore, students are not solely rewarded with reciprocity, as they are able to see the effects of their service and how they have affected others’ lives, but also with the opportunity to further explore their interests, which does allow them to pursue their future vocational aspirations.

Most school districts in Arizona do not require students to volunteer as a graduation requirement. Those that do, necessitate a number of hours to be completed and logged individually; for example, Deer Valley Unified School District in Maricopa County requires eight hours of volunteering during a student’s senior year. Of course any opportunity for one to help society should be applauded – however, this particular process negates cooperative long-term attachment to a beneficial project and does not incorporate knowledge learned in class, or apply meaning in a real-life context. The implementation of Service-learning programs into public school curriculum would uphold useful skills associated with community involvement and citizenship, as well as address problems in real settings rather than do repetitious tasks in seclusion.
Once Christmas arrives, Rafe’s students learn about the importance of helping others because it is the right thing to do, not because you feel you have to. Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
While I have taken part in several service projects in the past, the chance to expand my interests in helping the community is quite appealing. Performing community service is something that I enjoy, as it allows me to discover new interests while helping someone in need. Ever wonder why you didn’t get that job you wanted? How would you feel if you knew a recent high school graduate got that job because they were more qualified than you? High schoolers that do community service, that is required to graduate, are becoming more certified for jobs because they get all kinds of different experiences. From volunteering at the local gardens, giving service to the elderly and cleaning up the streets, they get to serve and put their time into the community.
Community service helps to develop a better and responsible character, which is deeply cherished by anybody. All three years at Westerville Central, I participated in key club. As a key club member, I have signed up for many different types of volunteering activities such as watching kids, making crafts, organizing places for events, line judging for middle school volleyball games, and more. Furthermore, the previous two years I volunteered at a local fire station to decorate the place for a Halloween event where little kids can come and collect candy and as well as play games. Over the previous two summer breaks, I have volunteered at the Westerville Public Library to reshelve books and DVDs and as well as reading to the kids.
I have always considered myself a very promising student. I have worked extremely hard and received high grades. I have a close knit group of friends and my teachers and I have mutual respect for each other .Although I would consider myself at this present stage ‘fulfilled’ something was missing. I realized it wasn’t a materialistic aspect of my life. Through a tragic incident I finally discovered what fit perfectly in that vacancy. The consecutive hospitalizations of my grandparents evoked great pain and sorrow. However, out of the scorching intensity of this tragedy I was warmed and comforted by realizing what I was devoid of: community service.
What I once thought was an impossible job, organizing so many books, people helped me understand the work process which made me gain self-confidence that I was able to produce in my work. Part of that confidence was also a sense of pride because I was responsible for placing books onto the shelves that many people come to read. Now that I have done my volunteer work, when I apply for scholarships and colleges, I can mention my volunteer experience and the hours I did. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include; social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society. Without community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibly or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live.
These experiences have afforded me opportunities to demonstrate my gifts and talents that had previously gone undiscovered. Through different community service opportunities, I either learned something new about myself or I was reassured something. These qualities include that I am creative, reliable, open-minded, passionate, and an effective team player. Community service changed my life by developing my character through enhancing my transferable skills, which allowed me to see the world differently. Everyone, from all walks of life, needs to in some way, shape, or form give back to the community because it will not only benefit the less fortunate but it will benefit the volunteers as well. Additionally, I learned about the wide variety of resources available to help the community. There are so many resources out there that people are ignorant to like certain shelters and food banks. Ultimately, community service taught me the greatest gift I could ever receive, how to be
