Cell phones are like a fire, when left unsupervised, they can become disastrous, but when managed properly, they can be a beautiful thing. Over the years, cell phones have developed into multi-purpose and immensely essential devices. Presently, many look towards electronics and see a monster of a creation beginning to tear apart society. What people do not realize is how beneficial cell phones and other devices can be when used rightfully. In recent years, there has been much debate on whether schools should or should not allow devices in the classroom. There are times during school when as situation arises that could sacrifice the safety of students and “in an emergency, such as an attack, bomb threat, or school shooting, students with cell phones can instantly contact their parents or the proper authorities” (Hastings 5). During life-threatening events within schools, parents worry if their child is safe. They can panic and begin to believe the worst if they do not receive a text from their child letting them know they are okay. Taking phones away stops students from reassuring their parents they are safe when in life threatening situations. In addition, electronic devices allow students to quickly call authorities in alarming situations. Most parents see schools as a safe place to send their kids during the day. As schools are very safe, there are times when threatening situations are brought upon them. In the event a student becomes aware of one of these situations before an adult, they can immediately contact the police if they have possession of their phone at the given time. When parents of these children are first informed of the current circumstances, most would like to know where their child is to ensure their safety. Fortunately, cell phones allow parents to track their child’s location. When unaware of their child’s current whereabouts, parents will fear something terrible has happened to their child. A student explains that “cell phones have games and apps that might distract kids from schoolwork” (Baker 7). Over time, cell phones have grown into incredibly resourceful devices. Simply because cell phones can be distracting to some, does not mean they do not serve as a great resource for many others. Music for example can help one concentrate when working on a school project. Furthermore, some argue that cell phones can be used to cheat on tests. As this may be true, many rules have been made that prohibit phones from being out during tests. Although some students will still take their phones out during tests to look up answers, the risk is much higher ultimately minimizes the number of phones out during tests. People also object the use of phones in school when they express that cell phones can be used to bully others. Almost all can agree that bullying has become a serious issue that no one should take lightly. As serious as it may be, there can be very strict rules made to limit this from happening. If photos or gossip are being spread throughout the school day via electronic device, it quickly gets squashed and is soon followed by harsh punishments.
