Choosing the Right University Program: A Personal Journey

Deciding what university program to choose, is one of the decisions that can change the course of your life drastically. Like you, when I was in high school I had to tackle that decision, and at that time, I decided to go to medical school. Three years later, when I moved to Canada, I was faced with the same challenge once again, not being able to medical school directly, I applied to the Health Sciences program, which it turned out to be a perfect fit for me. The Health Sciences program at the University of Ottawa, offers an interdisciplinary approach to studying human health. In 2015 3,784 student graduated from the program from the University of Ottawa, the large number of graduates’ doens’t necessarily mean a limit in the job opportunities. When I first entered the program, I was aware that many of my fellow students were joining the program in pursuit of following their dreams of becoming doctors. Nevertheless, soon after entering the program, we discovered that there is an array of choices that we can choose from instead of being fixated on one career choice. The solid foundation that the program offers whether in research or in diseases pathophysiology, allow the students to select from a variety of career options after graduation. Starting from medical school, which requires completing the same courses that the health sciences program offer. Nursing. Further, a career in physiotherapy opening a clinic that offers physiotherapy to patients following their surgery. Another choice is being nutritionist, developing policies related to healthy eating practices or evaluating existing ones. Students interested benign, optometrist, can option of a two year program them build on the experiences and skills learned in health sciences. Sonography, occupational therapy, laboratory technician are a few of the options that the students have the choice according to their preference. For me, health sciences program has scored me a job in the Canadian nuclear safety commission where they have directorate named “Radiation and health sciences” that is dedicated to looking at radiation’s impact on human health.
