Access to healthcare is the process whereby medical services is made readily available to people within a geographical location “having the timely use of personal health services to achieve the best health outcomes" (IOM, 1993). Attaining good access to care requires three discrete steps: gaining entry into the health care system and getting access to sites of care where patients can receive needed services (bphc 2014). Access to health care varies vastly across the globe. Hence, issues surrounding access to health care vary as well. Firstly, in the case of the LGBT community- they seem to be associated with health risks and co-morbidities like stress, depression, HIV etc., which are due to the level of exclusion and negative perception by some medical practitioners who are against the practice of their sexuality, which therefore leads them to develop personal beliefs that prevent them from seeking medical attention. “For LGBT individuals who often fear dealing with, or have faced bigotry in the healthcare arena, this has a far-reaching impact. It is also surrounded with major health and investment companies which constantly promote a high level of employment opportunities for people living within. These identified characteristics serve as a great deal of strength of this community- in that with the availability of jobs, medical care and education, people would be able to maintain a stable lifestyle, which in turn helps create good balance in the health and well-being of the population. Therefore, in order to be able to achieve good distribution of all these services towards these specific population, there needs to be an efficient means of communication that would be able create good awareness about the availability of these services. These means of communication could be the internet, radio, television etc, which are commonly utilized by people belonging to this group. hence it is easier to communicate intervention ideas with the major opinion leaders, like the mayor or public figures who can sway the population towards a healthier path. The fact that this population is so well-educated and technologically savvy is an advantage because we can make use of various communication devices to reach the majority of the population very easily.
