After years of bloody combat that left over 600,000 soldier’s dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, & the difficult Reconstruction process of restoring national unity and guaranteeing rights to the freed slaves began. By December 1865 the 13th Amendment had abolished slavery throughout the United States (Waldstreicher).
The Underground Railroad was an extremely complex organization whose mission was to free slaves from southern states in the mid-19th century. It was a collaborative organization comprised of white homeowners, freed blacks, captive slaves, or anyone else who would help. This vast network was fragile because it was entirely dependent on the absolute discretion of everyone involved. The Underground Railroad was what many slaves used to escape slavery. It was not an actual railroad, although it could easily be compared to one. It was a route, with safe houses and many other hiding spots for the slaves to use. The paths had conductors telling you where to go and people who would drive you to the next safe house. You had to be quick, you had to be strong, and you had to be very courageous. The Underground Railroad led all the way to Canada. There were many people helping the slaves, and even more people that were opposing them. It was no easy task. Many slaves died of sickness or natural causes, gave up and returned back to the plantation, or were caught and either killed or brought back. It was a rough journey but a good number of slaves prevailed and escaped to liberty, which in this time was not America.

The network of people worked together to construct an elaborate scheme that spanned from south to north on both sides of the Mississippi River and assisted runaway slaves in their escape to freedom. The road to freedom was long, scary and painful without the help received on the UGRR many wouldn’t have made it. First of all, according to Wright, in his article, Underground Railroad the term Underground Railroad started in 1830 when trains started to appear in America. The Underground Railroad was known to be a hidden network of people and places who helped escaped slaves from the south to the north, sometimes all the way to Canada. Slaves that travelled were thought to be a pack of men ranging from all ages but typically fifteen to thirty years of age (1). They travelled at night through the two main routes. The first route went straight north to Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. That route was mostly slaves from Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The second route took slaves from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware north through New Jersey (1). This process is most popularly known for the network of people, safe houses, and routes that helped escaped slaves in the South travel to the North to be free in the 1800s when slavery was at its most popular in the United States.

One might ask, what caused such internal tension within the most powerful nation in the world? During the nineteenth century, America was an infant nation, but toppling the entire world with its social, political, and economic innovations. In addition, immigrants were migrating from their native land to live the American dream (Roark 405-407).
