The founders of the pony express are William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors. It traveled from St.Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The route along the Pony Express began at the Platte River, next Fort Bridger, then to the Great Salt Lakes, and finally to Sierra Nevada. The route was a total of one hundred-ninety four miles.- They switched horses every ten- fifteen miles.With one hundred- ninety stations the Pony Express covered the rough terrain fastly.
To compare Ploughing in the Nivernais to the painting The Horse Fair one of the first things I see is in both painting there is people working with animals. In one painting it is oxen and the other it is horses. Rosa captures the muscling of the animals in each painting perfectly. There is green trees and blue skys in both images. She captures the majesticness of both horses and oxen.
Indian Horse is a novel by Richard Wagamese that beautifully explores the idea of family, and what it means to have people around you that make you feel at home. The reader is bombarded with an overwhelming sense of family and betrayal in the first few pages of the novel. As Richard Wagamese continues to write, one is able to see how safe Saul Indian Horse felt with his biological family, and he also shows how lost he felt without their love when he was taken to the Residential School. The school he was brought to was drained of all consensual love the moment it was open, and continued to fill the children with horrible feelings the entire time they were there. The shadows are through the use of chiaroscuro. The shadows make the horses look more real, as if they are actually moving through the fair ground. This painting of the industrial revolution is very thought provoking, and causes a person to think about of what was happening during the industrial revolution. He shows the horrors of the factories and the serenity of the nature. He makes someone want to go back in time where things were peaceful, and there was just nature. Everything was in it’s own natural state and peaceful.
In an empty room at the Timken Museum of Art hangs one of the most iconic paintings of Johannes Vermeer, the astonishing painting, Woman in Blue Reading a Letter. In the painting a pale woman’s stands patiently while reading a letter. The woman appears to be wearing a blue jacket and a long gray skirt, and only gazing at the letter, ignoring all of her surroundings. The top right of the painting seems to be a map of the Netherlands, which attracts the viewer because it explains the setting of where the painting took place. The blue jacket around the woman’s torso appears to exaggerate the woman’s stomach, giving the impression that she might be pregnant. The blue chairs resemble a sign of absence as if she lives alone. The light on the top left shines on her face which enhances the viewer’s view of the woman’s facial expression. Johannes Vermeer’s interpretation of complex colors, the light, and her body language inflicts a persuasion on the viewer that the women is traumatized by the news in the letter.
“All the Pretty Horses”, a novel written by Cormac McCarthy tells the tale about a man and his friend travelling the plains of Mexico after leaving their homes in Texas. As the novel’s name alludes to, horses are a central theme in the story as they represent manhood and freedom when John Grady, the protagonist, and his friend Rawlins get thrown in jail. McCarthy’s novel became critically-acclaimed which gained him more recognition, as well as a movie adaptation directed by Billy Bob Thornton. Even though Thornton’s adaption has the basics of the novel’s story it does not appropriately grasps its depth. In the book All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, symbolism is shown in multiple different ways. Symbolism is the usage of symbols to represent ideas and qualities. When reading the book, in the beginning these symbols do not tend to stand out, but as the plot continues symbols are found everywhere. Multiple symbols are used throughout the story like horses, blood and water. Some more less-noticeable symbols are dust, religion, and sunsets.
Who Wins “The Rocking Horse Winner”? Many middle-class Americans would agree that there has been a time in their life when they have felt a “grinding sense of shortage of money” when examining their personal finances (Lawrence 1). D.H. Lawrence’s short story, “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, was originally published in July 1926, in a magazine called, Harper’s Bazaar. The odd short story includes elements of fables and fantasies presenting morals and somewhat magical powers. Lawrence describes the downfall of an English family who focuses on money and luck rather than love and appreciation.
