Music plays a major role in the novel of The Hobbit there are three parts in the story where there is a singing scene. (form chapter 1 to 4) The first part with the dwarves, the second part with the Elves and the third part with the goblins. And in each song there is a different tone, content, and structure. In each song there is a tone to each. With the dwarves the tone of their song is happy and ready to go to the mountains. With the elves the tone of their song is jolly. And last the goblins there song tone is rude but in their own happy way. Each tone is about the same each are happy but the meanings of each song are really different. In the first stanza, first line; I saw two trees embracing, this means that there is a couple that is in love. In the second and third line we see that the male is weaker “one leaned on the other, as if to throw her down” and in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh line we notice that the female has the strength, willpower and is dominating. In the second stanza, line one, two and three we see that the female being dominant makes the male feel broken and intimidated. In line four “the most wind-warped, you could see”, hear we see that there is a major problem between the two.
This first song goes well with Holden because we see throughout the whole book, how Holden experiences loneliness. The book To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, and the song “Waiting on the World to Change”, sung by John Mayers, have many similarities. I have made six different connections between the song and the book. Most of these explain how Scout and Jem felt during this racial time period within the small span of their lives. I believe that because this book was written in a child’s perspective, it opens the door to new possibilities and experiences because of their unfiltered minds. Scout and Jem are not bias, unlike the fellow citizens of Maycomb County, Alabama. I can easily compare the lyrics in the song to Jem and Scout’s experiences.
Change can be shown in many different ways through objects and persons. So how is change shown in The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien? It could be Bilbo, seen as it is, he is at first looked upon as a “cowardly” fellow who was scared to go ten feet from his hole. But as time grew throughout the adventure, it became noticeable how much Bilbo had change since the beginning of the trip. So overall, the theme of change in The Hobbit is, in fact, shown most through Bilbo because in the beginning of the story, he is hesitant and scared to go through with adventure, in the middle, he is starting to believe he can do it and risks himself, and by the end, he is showing bravery, and sometimes stupidity, above everything else. He had changed from an apprehensive Bilbo, to a courageous Bilbo by the end of the tale.

Based on a series of Brothers Grimm fairy tales, Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods (1987) focuses on fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, Jack and Little Red Riding Hood’s wish of life fulfillment. Numerous fairy tales are intertwined with one new tale in attempt to carry the childhood stories into an adult realm without ridding of their child-based sensibilities. (Knapp, 2009.) Little Red’s song, “I know things now” is performed after she escapes the wolf’s belly. It is a reflection song on what she has learnt from the experience of speaking to strangers. Sondheim cleverly integrates musical devises such as key, modulation, pitch, accompaniment, dynamics, motif and rhythm alongside language and literary devices to contribute to the development and growth of the character and story.

The first musical component I will talk about is the vocals heard in the song. In the beginning of this song, a rising sun is being shown on the image track. To give us hints as to where this is taking place, a form of verbal chanting is played in the beginning. This chanting has a tribal feeling to it, which tells us that we are looking at some rural area rather than a metropolitan area. This depicts to the audience the setting for the rest of the song along with the rest of the movie.
