"This is not a moment, but a movement," (blacklivesmatter.com). Black Lives Matter is a multinational activist movement that began in the African-American communities of the United States of America. The Black Lives Matter Movement protests against the planned violence and racism that oppresses black communities across the United States of America and in other countries. Black Lives Matter started in 2012 after the state of chaos caused by the Trayvon Martin case. George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer murdered 17-year-old Trayvon Benjamin Martin, in Sanford, Florida. The social and civil outcries of the Black Lives Matter movement were spread using memes on popular social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook. Activists used videos to bring attention to the problems many people of color, specifically African Americans deal with in their daily lives. Activists also participate in protest and rallies to gain support. Some people who express an unfavorable opinion of the movement accuse the Black Lives Matter community of being anti-police. Other critics of the movement have questioned the group’s lack of focus regarding “black-on-black crime”. The group has been accused of being “inherently racist” (Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani), and others have called the movement anti-American. Some have even gone as far as to create groups to oppose the Black Lives Matter movement. Groups such as White Lives Matter, have begun showing up in small communities across the nation.
