From a broader standpoint, when you view the hardships of African Americans during early 20th century, what should come to mind about the unequal treatment they endured is their perseverance. For instance, after 245 long years of slavery and a reconstruction period that failed to embrace African Americans as Americans, these darker-skinned people still continued to perform whatever task was needed for them to sustain at the least their dignity. Even if their task was to travel thousands of miles north in order to be equipped with a better job for them to have a sufficient and safer life.
