For my fourth technology journal I read an article from Popular Mechanics called, “The Hair Dryer That Doesn’t Get Hot” by Alexander George. In this article Alexander tries the new Dyson Supersonic hair dryer (debuted in September) with a price tag of $400. The Supersonic has a very futuristic look. It has three attachments, and is about the same length as a “normal” dryer. Instead of having the air come out of a nozzle part, there is an open circle at the top. This dryer has the motor in the handle, which is unlike other dryers whose motor is in the back. Furthermore, the air uses a vent called an airfoil. This is the same property that produces lift in airplanes to create a breeze. Inside the air vent the Supersonic has a metal impeller
In 1909, Morgan opened a tailoring shop, selling coats, suits and dresses. While working in this shop he came upon a discovery which brought about his first invention. He noticed that the needle of a sewing machine moved with such a high speed that often its friction would scorch the thread of woolen materials. He then set out to develop a liquid that would be a useful polish to the needle, reducing friction. Once, when his wife called him to dinner, he wiped the liquid from his hands onto a piece of pony-fur cloth. When he returned to his workshop, he saw that the fibers on the cloth were now standing straight. He conceived that the fluid had actually straightened the fibers. In order to confirm his theory, he decided to apply some of the fluid to the hair of a neighbor's dog. The fluid straightened the dog's hair so much, that the neighbor, not recognizing his own pet, chased the animal away. Morgan then decided try the fluid on himself, trying small portions of his hair at first, and eventually his entire head. He was successful and had invented the first human-hair straightener. This invention has helped a lot commercially. A lot of today’s media features people with straightened hair. This might not be possible if Garrett Morgan hadn’t made the contributions he did. He marketed the product under the name the G. A. Morgan Hair Refining Cream and sold by his G. A. Morgan Refining Company, which became a very successful business.
The purpose of this lab was to calculate the specific heat of a metal cylinder
The calculated hurdle rate includes a safety margin because the highest measure of Re is used. This is not to say that Re could never succeed .
In “Straightening Our Hair”, Bell Hooks articulates her opinion of black women straightening their hair. “Black women straightening their hair seemed more and more to be exclusively a signifier of white supremacist oppression and exploration” (Hooks 337). Hooks illustrates that racial discrimination of African-American women forced them to want to conform to societies unrealistic white supremacist beauty standards. I agree with Bell Hooks arguments because she supported it with historical and surface reasoning’s on why women straighten their hair.
The musical Hairspray started off as movie in 1988 written by John Waters and in 2003 was turned into Broadway show and then was re created into a movie again in 2007. The exceedingly loud rap music blasts my ears as I walk through the dressing room door. “Hey guys!” I holler as I dump my bulky bag on the floor. A teammate and I begin debating whether we have played against Spruce Grove before, and come to the conclusion that we haven’t. This makes me enthusiastic because it’s a fresh start. I put on my girdle and shin pads listening to the excited whoops of my team mates as they chat about the approaching game. My callused fingers throb in the process of yanking on my wax laces ensuring they are tight enough to confine my ankles. I promptly adjust my helmet while coach clarifies the plays and the techniques we’ll use to demolish Spruce Grove. “Let’s do this!” A teammate hollers as we exit the dressing room and step onto the ice. We do two half ice laps stretching our stiff muscles, then proceed to do four board rushes to get our heart rates going. The coach throws the rings onto the ice so we can begin our warm up passes and drills to prepare us for the game. The buzzer sounds, therefore we collect the rings and skate to the bench. “Brittney, Erin, Ella, Mack and Maggie,” Coach declares the
A vacuum cleaner is a device that uses an air pump to suck up dirt into a dust bag for later disposal. In Howard Nemerov's "The Vacuum," a widowed husband mourns the death of his wife while he observes their vacuum in his quiet house. As he studies the vacuum he notices it "sulks in the corner closet" (line 2). His observation sets the tone for the poem and personifying the household device. As he continues to personify the vacuum throughout the poem, he notes the lifelessness of the vacuum, memories of his wife using the vacuum, and how "life is cheap as dirt" (line 13) but dirt is still everywhere even when she is gone. The speaker in "The Vacuum," uses the vacuum cleaner to symbolize his wife's death, the connection to his wife, and how he perceives his life after her death.
It has often been said that hair weaves are typically thought to be used by African Americans. Weaving is a technique that consist of sewing artificial or human hair that has been sewn onto a weft onto braids or a weaving net. A weaving net helps to protect your hair from damage caused by the tension of the thread while pulling it to secure the wefts.
This is called a hair dryer, this is a powerful tool that will dry your hair quick and beautifully, and it will leave your hair looking very smooth. This is not a toy and whatever you do, don’t you ever hold the dryer too close to your skin because it can burn you. I love you son with all my heart. Thank you, abuelita (grandma), I love you too. I can barely feel anything; at last the moment has arrived.
Access to electricity gave Americans power to run labor-saving devices like refrigerators , washing machines ,radios ,phonographs , electric razor and iron and vacuum cleaners .These list of inventions helped shaped America in the 1920s . The first lightweight electric iron was invented by Earl Richardson . Richardson was an American businessman at the Ontario (California) Power Company .In 1905 the iron with a hot point became the first commercially successful electric laundry iron and was formally named the Hotpoint iron in 1907 . His design made the iron with more heat in the point . He had called his new company Hotpoint which he founded in 1911. The Thor washing machine was produced by Hurley Electric Laundry Equipment Company. It was the first electric washing machine sold in the United States . Alva J. Fisher was the Hurley engineer designer for the project . The Thor washing machine exploded mass marketed through America . Sales was reaching 913,000 units in 1928. Music introduced Americans to large-scale radio
2. Open lint screen, there is one in every dryer so locate it and remove the lint intoa trash can.
Heat is thermal energy being transferred from one place to another, because of temperature changes. This can take place by three processes. These three processes are known as conduction, convection, and radiation.
A fan is a device used to induce airflow and generally made from broad, flat surfaces which revolve or oscillate. The most prevalent applications of fans are for creature comfort, ventilation, or gaseous convey for industrial purposes. The simplest kind of fans is leaves or flat objects, waved to engender a more comfortable atmosphere. Typical applications include decor, climate control, cooling systems, personal wind-generation (such as an electric table fan), ventilation (like an exhaust fan), winnowing (such as dissevering chaff of cereal grains), abstracting dust (like the sucking in a vacuum cleaner), drying (conventionally in addition to heat) and to provide draft for a fire. It is also commonly to utilize electric fans
Washing machines have become the most popular mechanical device throughout all modern times. “For thousands of years, one of the most tiresome household tasks was the washing of clothes and lines” (Field Enterprises Educational Corporation 45 ). Washing machines are greatly needed in everyday life. Much labor and has been relieved due to the wonderful invention of the washing machine. The washing machine is also a major time saver. Washing machines have developed proficiently throughout all the years and are still developing day by day. From the wash board to the electric washing machine, laundry has truly been transformed in America, as a result, cleaning laundry is nearly effortless.
