The Great Gatsby, a story written by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. This story was written in 1920s during the jazz age. During this time where there was a lot of rich people living in America after World War one. They were rich due to the stock market and mostly the people who were rich where stock holders, they were called New Money. The people who were rich from older generations they owned companies, farms and business they were called old money, and they were the etiquette and smart than the new money. Most of the new money people had dreams but many ended up not achieving their dreams because they didn’t know how to control their money, and they lost it all. He had monumental parties, which many rich people came from east and west egg. East and west egg are town where the higher class people lived in. Even people that Gatsby never knew came. Although Gatsby had everything he was missing something precious in his life. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way....and distinguished nothing except a single green light"(Fitzgerald 26). This show us that Gatsby is curious about something he is trying to achieve a specific goal. Dark water in the quote shows and resembles the society and people Gatsby is around. They are dark because they don’t really care about each other and the just get drunk and enjoy life. The curiosity in Gatsby reviles that Gatsby would never give up on his dream. For example, “He broke off and began to walk up and down a desolate path of fruit rinds and discarded favors and crushed flowers” (Fitzgerald 116). This quote reinforces the death of the American dream by setting. In this quote the flowers represented Daisy and they were crushed. The desolate path of fruit rind resembles Gatsby’s luxurious life. Fruit rinds also resembles how people are after leaving Gatsby’s house parties. Crushed flowers are his dreams. That’s because Daisy is a flower name. Also that shows that there is no hope that they would ever have a life together. Gatsby dream is forever gone and will never come
