Scott had a boring job. Sitting in front of a desk every day, attending phone calls. He didn’t particularly like his job but he didn’t hate it enough to leave it. He dismissed the thought as stupid because he needed income. There was no other job that he could apply to, being a dropout. What he did like to do was to write. And write he did all through the day whenever he could.
Jillian saw Scott at his computer writing something. She felt sorry for the kid. She had taken him in and given him a job. He needed to earn so that he could apply to a journalism school. His parents disowned him, forcing Scott to work. Jillian came to know of Scott through a friend. When she met him, something had made her employ him. He was so immersed in it that he didn’t notice Jillian walking up behind him. “Um, Scott, what are you writing?” Scott jolted and then turned around to see her, standing, smiling at him.
“It’s for a girl I like.” Scott mumbled sheepishly, looking at the floor. Jillian could see the embarrassment make his face red. She knew what it felt like, liking someone and how it felt when it clicked. So acting oblivious, she continued, “So when are you going to give it to her?”
“I thought that I could give it to her this weekend when I go back home.” he mumbled. She remembered that she had given him a day off, the Friday this week. “Why aren’t you leaving on Friday?”
“Um, I have some work. They’ve called me for an interview, a test of sorts at the Journalism school.” And she could see him going back into his shell, into the barrier that he built around himself.
He needs someone he can trust. Sometimes parents are hypocrites. She thought and she pulled up a chair up to him. She sat down and looked at him. Thin, fragile, a gust of wind could take him away. “Scotty, look at me. You are wonderful and trust me when I say this. There are people far worse than you.
