“Mostly, I could tell, I made him feel uncomfortable. He didn’t understand me, and he was sort of holding it against me. I felt the urge to reassure him that I was just like everybody else. Just like everybody else.” - (Camus, L'Étranger, 1942) The buildings towered over James, scraping the clouds, and the bustling crowds swarmed around him on the busy city street. He felt nervous and intimidated, his low position in the wheelchair diminishing his confidence with every passers-by stare. With a deep breath, James began to stoically push his chair up the ramp towards his destination, a marketing firm hopefully about to offer him a job. He cleared his throat and waited for the next line of questioning to begin. “Well James, here at Ruckus Advertisementing we are looking for someone energetic and dynamic, someone who will go anywhere to make the deal, someone who is tireless and unflagging, someone eager to climb the ladder. How well do you think you fit that role?” Coldness settled on James’ heart as these words bounced around in his brain. Memories of previous taunts about his mobility flashed through his mind, but James continued. “Even though I’m in a wheelchair, I don’t see it being a barrier for me to get where I need to go. I think that I can be all the things you’ve listed and more.” “That’s great, James, but we need someone who can stand out in a crowd, someone who interacts easily with clients and someone they can relate to.” Mr. Mackerel paused and glanced at his wheelchair. “James, do you believe that our clients will be able to relate to you?” With sweaty palms and muscles tensed, he composed himself and responded as best he could.
