In the twenties there were good and bad people during the twenties. There was old money and new money. Many things were fluctuating (4) during this time period. In The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald’s said, “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven‘t had the advantages that you‘ve had,” (1). Should people always think of this quote before they start criticizing someone that they do not even know personally? In The Great Gatsby, people were criticizing each other for being poor, rich, and somewhere in between. Like a lot of people in the world there was one that was complacent (1) with his self because he got everything, which is Tom. Some were Intimation (1) like Tom and Gatsby were. They all had these American dreams they tried to achieve. Some of the American dreams worked out, but some got crushed. There were murders that happened. One that is really talked about is when Myrtle had died. Why did Gatsby take the blame for it when Daisy had ran her over? Why did she run her over? Was it because Tom was being irreverent (7) to Daisy by Myrtle being his mistress? Did Gatsby love Daisy that much where he would take the blame for Myrtle death? This just was incoherent (8). Nick Carraway says: “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together and let other people clean up the mess they had made…” (Fitzgerald 170). Nick makes this observation about his family in the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F.Scott Fitzgerald. In the spring of 1922, Nick moves to West Egg and meets a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby; there he witnesses Gatsby longing for a life with Daisy Buchanan and failing to achieve the American dream. Tom and Daisy initially show their carelessness by deciding to marry each other when neither of them were fully committed. Their thoughtless behavior carries on through their marriage as they both partake in affairs and emotionally torture their partners. When the Buchanans show their next act of carelessness it results in the death of three people. 1. The most crucial point in Chapter 1 is the call Tom receives from his lover. After Nick, Jordan, Tom, and Daisy spent a well mannered night together, the phone rings and Tom rushes to it. When Daisy follows behind it’s revealed it’s a mistress from New York. This is a crucial point as it reveals the falseness in Tom and Daisy’s relationship. Although it initially looked as if all was fine, a larger theme of disingenuousness is behind their relationship.
Chapter one introduces Hafid, a wealthy and successful salesman and his assistant Erasmus, a trusted worker and friend. Hafid lives in a beautiful palace with every type of luxury imaginable. He understand that he would die soon and askes Erasmus to estimate the value of his properties and to distribute them among others. Erasmus is now asked to give half his fortune to the poor as he did annually and sell his belongings in for gold. Hafid only intends to keep enough money to last him for the remaining of his life and the rest disturbed to the people who need it and to his emporiums. In The Yellow Wallpaper, a wife is pushed to insanity, in A Doll’s House, a housewife goes against expectation, in The Great Gatsby, male dominance is pushed to the extreme. Gender roles dictate men and women’s lives. The concept that you must live up to society’s expectations controls men and women’s thoughts and actions, and it must come to an end. All these authors captured a vital lesson to be learned: Men and woman should be treated equally.

Their polar opposites, the East Eggers, are signified by Tom and Daisy Buchanan; these people have inherited their riches from the country’s wealthiest old families and treat their money with dignity and social grace. Money, a mere object in the hands of the newly wealthy, is unconscientiously squandered by Gatsby in an effort to bring his only source of happiness, Daisy, into his life once again. Over the course of his countless wild parties, he dissipates thousands upon thousands of dollars in unsuccessful attempts to attract Daisy’s attention. For Gatsby, the only way he could capture this happiness is to achieve his personal “American Dream” and end up with Daisy in his arms. Gatsby’s obsession with Daisy is somewhat detrimental to himself and the ones around him; his actions destroy relationships and ultimately get two people killed.
As an American citizen we seem to make presumption that all cultures are different from ours, and some might even call those cultures weird. Americans fail to realize just how similar we are to these “weird” cultures. By reading Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe and The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald , it makes the reader realize how similar the African culture is from the American culture. There 's those obvious differences we already knew about with the two cultures, but readers can learn that not just American culture value men and give them advantages, but many cultures including 1900 's African culture. Hugh Hefner once said, “I looked back on the roaring Twenties, with its jazz, 'Great Gatsby' and the pre-Code films as a party I had somehow managed to miss.” The parties of the Roaring Twenties were used to symbolize wealth and power in a society that was focused more on materialism and gossip than the important things in life, like family, security, and friends. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrays the characters of Tom and Daisy Buchanan as the epitome of the era. The reader sees these characters acting selfishly and trying to meddle with others’ lives. On the other hand, Nick Carraway, the narrator, acts more to help others and act honestly. Initially the reader sees Carraway’s views towards Jay Gatsby as negative as Gatsby’s actions are perceived as being like the Buchanan’s. As the novel moves forward, the reader notices a change in Carraway’s attitude towards Gatsby. Carraway sees Gatsby for whom he truly is, and that is a loving person who only became rich to win Daisy’s heart. But in this the reader also sees how corrupt and hurtful Gatsby’s actions were to the love of his life. Gatsby’s relationship with Daisy reveals that just as Gatsby’s dream of wooing Daisy is corrupted by illegalities and dishonesty, the “American Dream” of friendship and individualism has disintegrated into the simple pursuit of wealth, power, and pleasure.
