Yasmeen Abdelhady Ms. Garcia American Literature II The American Dream is the notion that the American economic, social, and political system makes it possible for every individual to be successful, the hope for equality and self-fulfillment. America seemed to promise endless opportunities socially and financially for anyone who is willing to work hard. F. Scott Fitzgerald condemns the idea of the American Dream in The Great Gatsby. Through the empty lives of three characters, Fitzgerald shows that chasing unattainable dreams will only lead to misery. Everyone in the lower class works toward being a part of the upper class. Myrtle Wilson dreamed of being a woman of status and marrying a gentleman who was capable of taking care of her. Unlike other characters in the book, instead of achieving her own dream, Myrtle had to find a man to achieve her dream for her. Jay Gatsby on the other hand changed his whole life around, did everything in his will to become part of the upper class so he can win over the true love of his life. He must have believed that life rewards those who work hard and if he sticks to his plan he could accomplish whatever he set his mind to. Despite Daisy Buchanan’s love for Gatsby, she chose to marry Tom Buchanan because he could socially and financially protect him. Daisy chose wealth over true love and happiness because she wanted to be a woman of status regardless of whether she was truly happy or not. Fitzgerald portrays Gatsby as an individual who will continuously struggle to attain their dream, but rather he is like “boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”(189) Gatsby destroys his old identity, forgetting his past to become a new and improved person, someone capable of achieving... ... middle of paper ... ...atsby’s shady background, she runs back into her equally shallow husband’s arms. Daisy is careless with people’s lives because she let Gatsby take the blame for her unintentional manslaughter of Myrtle Wilson. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald portrays a society full of people who have corrupted the true meaning of the American Dream. Fitzgerald portrays the ultimate failure of the American Dream through individuals who believed that wealth is everything. His novel suggests that wealth and materialistic gain are all that concerns people. Some people are born into wealth and others have to work their way through life to gain it. This novel portraits an entire nation of people who are willing to throw everything away just to attempt to achieve an unattainable dream.
The American dream is defined as “the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative”, yet many people in this day of age believe that this is no longer a plausible aspiration. Neverless, this demeanor is at the heart of the classic American tales of the highest and lowest points of the American spirit, making one question whether or not this fundamental dream is still worth pursuit. Though it is a path containing hardships and challenges, actively seeking to achieve what you desire is one of the most prominent life lessons throughout American literature, as evidenced through the Crucible, A Raisin in the Sun, and The Great Gatsby.

Fitzgerald does not praise wealth in the Great Gatsby but condemns it by drawing attention to the dreadful fall made by Gatsby. It is commonly perceived as someone who was born and starts out as poor but ambitious, and works hard enough to achieve wealth, prosperity, happiness, and stability. The written resolution demonstrates how ambitious and innocent Gatsby was in pursuing his dreams and how much he wanted to improve himself that his father applauded him, which once characterized the process of pursuing the American Dream. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald derides the gradual corruption of hard work and perseverance in the American Dream by utilizing the motif of driving and incorporating it with the the ideas of greed and carelessness.
