The Golden Ball for Portugal´s Golden Boy
Cristiano Ronaldo should win the Ballon D'or. The Ballon D'or (Golden Ball) is the most prestigious individual award a footballer can achieve. The award is given to the best player over the previous calendar year and is voted for by national team managers and captains alike.
Cristiano Ronaldo is by far the most complete player to grace the club and international stage over the last year and that is only one of hundreds of reasons as to why deserves the most coveted award in world football. The fact that Ronaldo is such complete footballer is agreed upon by many journalists, players and managers across the world. An example of this is well documented in an article by Firstpost.Sports which poses the question, ¨What’s not to like about Cristiano Ronaldo?¨ and that for the Ballon D´or, Ronaldo can be ¨The only choice.¨
The fact that Ronaldo has been the most complete player over the last year is well supported with stats displaying how he scored; 9 with his head, 4 by free kicks, 7 penalties, 19 with his right foot and 16 with his left foot accumulating to a massive 55 goals in one season. In addition, this season he has scored another 3 with his head, 2 via free kick, 6 via penalty kick, 11 with his right foot and 3 with his left. The most incredible fact about the last statistics mentioned are that he has produced such varied and incredible amounts of goals and it is only December. The statistics that he produces are frightening at times.
In addition to his mind-boggling amounts of goals for his club, Real Madrid, Ronaldo has in short terms ´single handedly´ dragged Portugal through the group stages and a make or break match against Sweden, to the World Cup. This was achieved on a night where he saved one of his best Portuguese performances for the biggest stage possible. After drawing the first leg of the tie 1-1 (scoring Portugal´s only goal) Cristiano and his team-mates then had the tough task of going away to Sweden to face Zlatan Ibrahimovic and co in an all or nothing match in which the winner would progress to the Worlc Cup in Brazil in 2014. Ronaldo did what he does best. A master class in clinical finishing and team leadership was produced from arguably the greatest player ever to play the game as he produced a wonderful hattrick.
