Elizabeth: The Golden Age was an outstanding film that portrayed what it was like to be the queen of England at the time. The movie showed many different situations that a ruler of any country would have to face. The actress that played Elizabeth did a wonderful job portraying how Elizabeth would have acted with each decision she had to make to keep herself and others safe. Queen Elizabeth was the first tolerant queen. She allowed the people of her country to be whatever religion that they wanted to be, that is if they didn’t break the laws. Philip married Elizabeth’s sister, Mary I. Mary I was very Catholic and wanted the country to remain Catholic. Mary I tried to have an heir to the throne, so she married the most Catholic man that she could find. She married Philip II. She was unable to have children. Mary died of disease. Without an heir to the throne, Elizabeth took the throne. Philip tried to marry Elizabeth, but she said no. Elizabeth was worried that if she marries then she would be controlled by the man that she married. He would make the decisions for her even though she is the rightful ruler of England. Mary queen of Scots is Elizabeth’s cousin. Mary was imprisoned when there was an uprising in Scotland. Mary seeked help from her cousin Elizabeth. When Elizabeth helps her escape, Mary flees south for protection. Mary is in full knowledge that Catholics in England and Philip II wants her to be the queen of England. Mary is Catholic and so is Philip II. Elizabeth is Protestant. This is a problem for Philip II. Philip wants the queen to be Catholic, so Mary and he start to plan Elizabeth’s assassination. In the movie, Philip used Mary Queen of Scots as a reason to go to war with England. Mary was set up. Philip II knew that the letters that she was sending were being intercepted. The Enterprise was the name of the plot to kill Elizabeth. Once Elizabeth found out that Mary was planning to kill her; she had to make a huge decision. Was Mary going to get away with the plan or was she to be killed for treason? Are royals above the law or are they to be treated like the common citizen of the city? Elizabeth’s decision was to kill her cousin. Elizabeth was very upset with want she had to do, but it had to be made for the safety of herself and her country. Not only had that split society, but the conflicts of slavery began to greatly rise, which created the problem of sectionalism, which led to Henry Clay’s Missouri Compromise in 1820. Many areas had differing views on slavery and voting, which only strengthened the belief that sectionalism was taking over the smidgeon of nationalism that lingered.
After the War of 1812, America was characterized as the Era of Good Feelings due to the national pride witnessed during Monroe’s presidency. However, even though it was distinguished as so, many aspects of America were diminishing, which signifies why it was not an “Era of Good Feeling.” First, the growing tension within the economy, due to the individual states currency circulating the nation, was a failure. This event was soon called the Panic of 1819 because the issue spun out of control and led the Americans to question whether the bank was a good system or not. Furthermore, during this time period, Chief Justice John Marshall’s court continued to strengthen the federal government and its primacy, which imbalanced the federal government and state power during the early years of the Republican Party. Not to mention, in the early 1800s, slavery was becoming an increasingly sectional issue, meaning that it was dividing the nation along regional lines intensively. Indeed historians have traditionally labeled the period after the War of 1812 as the “Era of Good Feelings”, but the tension between nationalism and sectionalism increased additionally, which were inevitably conspicuous and began to impair the economy, intensify sectionalism by the means of slavery and expansion and added disunity within the government.

In 1553, Mary I became the Queen of England. Mary married King Philip of Spain in order to secure Catholicism in England. Elizabeth unwillingly became the leader of Mary’s opposition, the British Protestants of the time. She attempted to force her younger sister, Elizabeth, into attending Catholic mass in order to set an example for her followers. Elizabeth was raised Protestant and didn’t want to convert, so she avoided mass by complaining of stomach aches. A man named Thomas Wyatt sent a letter informing Elizabeth that he was planning a rebellion in order to prevent the marriage between the two royals.
The Gilded Age gets its name from a book by Mark Twain called The Gilded Age: a Tale of Today. It was written in 1873, and unfortunately was not that successful. While the Gilded Age conjures up visions of ostentatious displays of wealth and decorative parties, the over all topic was politics. The book gives an extremely negative assessment of the state of American democracy at that time. Which does not come as a huge surprise coming from Twain, who famously said "It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress.” So when faced with sweeping changes in the American economy after the Civil War, the American political system both nationally and locally dealt with these problems in the best way possible, by inevitably and incredibly becoming corrupt.

In the 1920’s the flappers shocked everyone and set the path for other people who yearned to stand out and be different. When Mary was on her deathbed with cancer the Duke of Norfolk tried to get Mary to sign a paper that would allow him to kill Elizabeth and become King of England. The Duke of Norfolk would speak against Queen Elizabeth and try to turn England against her. At one meeting she had to lock him and his men up so he wouldn’t cause a disturbance. They both had their differences.

Heartbreakers, heartthrobs, comedians and beautiful women dominated movie screens across the country in theaters, called Nickelodeons. Nickelodeons were very basic and small theaters which later transformed into opulent and monumental palaces. When sound was introduced into film by Warner Bros. Pictures, “talkies” took top rank over silent films. “Movies were an art form that had universal appeal.
