Elizabeth: The Golden Age was an outstanding film that portrayed what it was like to be the queen of England at the time. The movie showed many different situations that a ruler of any country would have to face. The actress that played Elizabeth did a wonderful job portraying how Elizabeth would have acted with each decision she had to make to keep herself and others safe. Queen Elizabeth was the first tolerant queen. She allowed the people of her country to be whatever religion that they wanted to be, that is if they didn’t break the laws. In the movie, at the beginning, she was talking to some of her royal people. Philip married Elizabeth’s sister, Mary I. Mary I was very Catholic and wanted the country to remain Catholic. Mary I tried to have an heir to the throne, so she married the most Catholic man that she could find. She married Philip II. She was unable to have children. Mary died of disease. Without an heir to the throne, Elizabeth took the throne. Philip tried to marry Elizabeth, but she said no. Elizabeth was worried that if she marries then she would be controlled by the man that she married. He would make the decisions for her even though she is the rightful ruler of England. Mary queen of Scots is Elizabeth’s cousin. Mary was imprisoned when there was an uprising in Scotland. Mary seeked help from her cousin Elizabeth. When Elizabeth helps her escape, Mary flees south for protection. Mary is in full knowledge that Catholics in England and Philip II wants her to be the queen of England. Mary is Catholic and so is Philip II. Elizabeth is Protestant. This is a problem for Philip II. Philip wants the queen to be Catholic, so Mary and he start to plan Elizabeth’s assassination. In the movie, Philip used Mary Queen of Scots as a reason to go to war with England. Mary was set up. Philip II knew that the letters that she was sending were being intercepted. The Enterprise was the name of the plot to kill Elizabeth. Once Elizabeth found out that Mary was planning to kill her; she had to make a huge decision. Was Mary going to get away with the plan or was she to be killed for treason? Are royals above the law or are they to be treated like the common citizen of the city? Elizabeth’s decision was to kill her cousin. Elizabeth was very upset with want she had to do, but it had to be made for the safety of herself and her country. Mary’s reaction was that if she did not stay loyal to her god than she was going to hell. She faced her death with a brave face. Now that Mary was dead, Philip had a reason to go to war with
