Everyone has one or two things that they’re afraid of, whether it be snakes, spiders, or the dark. The goal of a good haunted house is to attack these fears and incorporate some way to frighten everyone that passes through their eerie halls. Unbeknownst to most, no matter how brave someone may be, everyone is afraid of something. Alpträume attacks a fear that many people do not know they have, which is the fear of one’s own life becoming as twisted as what we witness in horror films. The name itself of the house is German for nightmares, which you will surely experience after enduring the frightfulness that is Alpträume. In this room, he or she witnesses two children playing checkers. The daughter wins the game, and she easily retrieves a knife from her dresser and stabs her brother without hesitation. The brother makes no move to resist, indicating that this is a typical occurrence in the house. This strongly reinforces the house’s theme of altering reality, as the children are no strangers to murder, which is a foreign thing to see. This is unknown and twisted, and those two things put together invoke deep fear into the heart of the customer as they see the dead boy lying on the ground, and are asked if they want to join the game. The house takes simple and common ideas of children, which we see almost every day, and checkers, a game that we have all most likely played, and morphs them into murderous and hateful monsters that we will constantly see. The first thing he or she will encounter after entering is a motherly figure with mascara running down her face and blood on her hands. She is cradling a baby in her arms who begins to cry, and this seems to agitate the mother. Very suddenly, the baby is placed on the counter and the mother takes out a large cleaver and stares at the baby for a minute, causing the customer to wonder about what awful thing she is about to do. She cuts off the baby’s head and limbs and places the head into a boiling pot of water. Not unlike the rest of the house, this is such an abnormal and cruel occurrence over a seemingly small thing, the baby crying, and is similar to the cruel and punishing killing of the child over a simple child’s game. This simple topic conjures up great fear inside the mind of the customer who is witnessing a mother, which we all have, murdering her own child. There is no display of motherly love, which is what we are all accustomed to. Instead, customers witness the exact opposite, murder. While the baby is in the pot, the mother grabs what the customer will identify as a bottle of medicine and forces a spoonful of it down your throat while the father from the first room physically restrains you.
