What is geography, and why do we use it? Geography is the study of the Earth. We use it to understand the basic physical systems that affect everyday life. First, we need to learn all five themes of geography and what they mean. One of the five themes is
Location, which describes where a place is. My location right now is the
Jennings County High School. Location is important to learn because you have to know where you are or where you are going. Absolute location, or site, is a specific latitude and longitude coordinate. You will have to check a map for this kind of location. For example, my small town of North Vernon is,
Thirty-nine North and Eighty-five West. Those are the specific coordinates to
North Vernon. The next Location is Relative Location.

Using Relative location, is explaining a location using things that surround it. Now your buddy knows the location of where you are. Then, you can tell each other to meet up at lunch! That is another location that you both know. Location is very important and is just as important as the other five themes of geography. Place is another theme of geography. Place is pretty simple and people use the term all the time. Place describes the features that makes a site unique. An example for place is stalls and toilets are features that make a restroom unique. In a kitchen, a faucet and stove make it unique.
What makes a house unique is it has bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, basement, and attic. Not all houses have all of that but some do. An amusement park is place and there a lot of things that make it unique. Such as rollercoasters, different rides, and lots of food places. Now, we have Region for our third theme. Regions are areas that share common characteristics.
Region is kind of like cities. Cities are organized areas with streets, public gathering spaces, and schools. Regions can be defined with
Geography Matters… :Geography in literature is important because it can help define and develop characters. Geography includes hills, rivers, mountains, valleys...etc but they can also be political, historical, and cultural. For example in the novel Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks, the protagonist Katie who is escaping from her abusive husband moved to North Carolina where she found a job as a waitress and had to walk to her job because she had no car. On her walks it would sometimes rain which helps her develop as a character because it symbolizes her growth after having a rough past.
1. Aspects of cultural geography: This is a field which focuses on spatial aspects of human cultures, which is spilt between cultural hearths and cultural landscapes. Cultural hearths are the crucibles of civilization that changed regions, mainly due to cultural diffusion. Understanding the cultural diffusions allows geographers to study the migration patterns of civilizations. Cultural landscape is the landforms that a culture creates. Physical and cultural geography interact in unity.

Geography can help us determine how climate change will alter different regions and help us understand our environment. Becoming geographic literate has become most important now that modern society is incredibly globalized. Businesses often operate in multiple countries, and consequently they hire people who understand how to market and sell their products to diverse groups of people from different geographic locations. The place where it is vital to know geography is in political affairs. So many disputes could have been avoided if only people would have paid a little more attention to geographic
The Five Themes of Geography are: Location – Absolute points on a map or grid or Relative to where something may be; Place – The physical and/or human characteristics of a locations; Human/Environment Interactions – How humans have impacted the landscape or environment; Relationship between places Movement – How humans interact on the earth (i.e. how they communicate over distance (short or long)) and Regions – a unit of space that has commonalities defined by physical, human and environmental geography. The Explorers of the New World may have not known what the Five Themes of Geography were but they quickly learned. Of the five themes the ones that they all took advantage of was the physical Location and Place as they learned to navigate to and from as well as through their new environments. Over Time the explorers began to discover the relationships within their environments and original occupants of the lands as well as the regions in which they now occupied.
In the book “Why Geography Matters More Than Ever”, the author, Harm de Blij, discusses the importance of geography, how it can affect us in any place or any time, and why it matters. But most importantly, he succeeds to advance our perception of the world’s geography. Throughout the book de Blij highlights the many benefits of being educated about geography. He explains that it is important that we are informed about this topic so we can be more prepared for the events happening around the world. This book illustrates just how essential it is to be well-educated when it comes to geography.
Since the beginning of humankind, the study of geography has captured the imagination of the people. In ancient times, geography books extolled tales of distant lands and dreamed of treasures. The ancient Greeks created the word "geography" from the roots "ge" for earth and "grapho" for "to write." These people experienced many adventures and needed a way to explain and communicate the differences between various lands. Today, researchers in the field of geography still focus on people and cultures (cultural geography), and the planet earth (physical geography).
Now you know was how geography affected many ancient civilizations and how those civilizations use them. The climate was a big role in the geography because it would depend if they were able to grow their crops. The rivers and mountains would offend help them grow their crops and protect them from other civilizations or invasions. Every civilization would use their geography that was around them the way that would most benefit them.
Amusement parks are by far one of the most thrilling places on earth. As you wait in a long line to get in park, you can hear numerous kids, adults, and tourist shouting off the top of their lungs due to a tremendous jaw-dropping drop on their beloved roller coasters.

There was a time a person would use a roadmap to get from one location to another. Some also would stop and ask for directions. Today, you seldom see paper maps and people stopping at a local gas station for directions. Many vehicles come with a navigation system that provides a real-time map of the vehicle’s current location as well as systematic directions to requested destination.
