The fish traps were very controversial because using a fishnet did not need a lot of people to work it. It needs a small amount of labor for it to catch salmon it was taking the jobs away from fishermen who did this job to get money. In 1912 the fisheries strike happened which the fishermen tried to use this strike as a justification of getting rid of the fishnet. Commercial fishery is when a fish is caught for commercial profit which is then sold to multiply countries the fishermen that normally do this go deep into the ocean to catch the most amount of fish. If Seaworld is such an ecstatic place, what excuse does Tilikum, their greatest well known orca whale, have for the three attacks on trainers? The documentary “Blackfish” was created by the director Gabriela Cowperthwaite because she questioned herself after realizing Tilikum's odd behavior over time in captivity, and if there was any indisputable parts to animal captivity?

There is much pollution and decline stocks in fish because it is very hard to regulate the seas. To fulfill the growing demand for seafood, many companies are forced to fish beyond areas that are supposed to be non-fishing zones. This is because there are hardly any laws or restrictions telling them where they can and cannot fish. Sally Driscoll and Tom Warhol report in, ‘Overfishing’, that itt wasn’t until 1956 where we saw our first regulation, the United Nations organized the first UN Convention of the Law of the Sea or the NCLOS which helped promote rights of all countries by establishing boundaries off shore. Meaning that some seafood fished in certain areas of the ocean cannot be sold in certain countries, and in some areas it is illegal to fish unless you have a permit from that country. In the late 1990s fishermen were getting stressed and many of them turned in their boats. This is because the government made new rules and regulations for the fishing industry. These rules are supposed to help endangered fish, although some are not helping at all. The government allows small boat fishermen to catch only 500 pounds of cod per day and requires them to toss any extra overboard before they reach shore.
I was raised in Jacksonville, Florida; “the river city” as most natives call it. As stated by the St. Johns River Water Management Disctrict the city has this nickname because it is home to the largest river in Florida, the St. Johns. The St. Johns is also one of the two rivers in the United States that flows north (2013). Since I was surrounded by it my whole life, activities involving water were very common. One of my family’s favorite things to do is have a fishing tournament for Easter on my grandparents’ dock on the St. Johns River.

A conflict that challenges the vision of reality for a person can be very difficult to deal with. “Two Fishermen” by Morley Callaghan shows itself as a significant example of this. The story features a small town news reporter, Michael Foster, who aligns with a hangman, K. Smith (“Smitty”), who is in town to execute Thomas Delaney on a controversial case. Michael feels a great deal of pressure from this relationship, as Smitty is frowned upon for his job title in times of controversy and misjustice, leading to a moral dilemma in which Michael is forced to either stand up for the dignity of others or fall into general social opinions.
In Blackfish, Director, Gabriela Cowperthwaite, addresses the accidents that occurred at SeaWorld involving trainers and whales. Cowperthwaite’s purpose is to educate the audience on the cruel treatment and rough conditions of whales that occur in SeaWorld. The film maintains a shocking tone in order to persuade the audience and appeal to feelings of sadness and anger.

While it is safe to say one must preserve the historical and cultural value of whaling nations and nations around the world, it can also be said of animals. While many nations continue to cling to their cultural ancestry background of whaling and the right for scientific research, it is proven that such human endeavors must be carefully and faithfully regulated. Commercial whaling has essentially seized to exist in the clear claims of such, but Japan and other nations are ever so slightly getting closer to that boundary. “We should remember in our dealings with animals that they are a sacred trust to us…[They] cannot speak for themselves” (Harriet Beecher Stowe).

During the early part of the 1900’s, the fishers in Mawelle devised elaborate rules regulating access to the fishing region and the number of nets utilized but they were not able to sustain a structured policy and rules controlling the number of nets to be used (Ostrom, 1990). With construction of new roads, an increase of population, and the increasing prices for fish by 1945, 71 nets were in use (Ostrom, 1990). With the expansive growth, the economic benefits diminished throughout Southern Sri Lanka and political corruption emerged, and policies were not enforced. Additionally, centralized government took over policy creation and enforcement that did not include local representation that had been in place since the early 1900’s (Ostrom, 1990). This solution was highly ineffective in controlling the entry of new fishers, which drove the system to a situation of virtual collapse where, at some point, more than 100 nets were being deployed at extremely low levels of productivity (Ostrom, 1990).
