The two only make introductions at the end of the meeting, and he tells her that she resembles Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta. Hazel admits that she has never seen the movie, to which Augustus invites Hazel over to his house to watch it. As they are waiting in the parking lot of the church, he pulls out a cigarette. Hazel gets upset until Augustus reveals to her that it is a metaphor. He never lights them, and thus they will not kill him. On the way to Augustus’ house, Hazel comments on how “...they have controls for people who can’t use their legs.” This leads to a discussion of how she got pulled out of school three years ago, while he is a sophomore at the local school. They exchange their struggles with cancer: Augustus reveals that he had osteosarcoma, but he is now cancer free after having his leg amputated; Hazel has thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs, and relies on Phalanxifor. When they get to Augustus’s home, they somehow get onto the topic of their favorite books. Hazel recommends An Imperial Affliction and Augustus gives Hazel The Price of Dawn. An Imperial Affliction holds a special place in Hazel’s heart because she can identify with the main character, Anna. After watching V for Vendetta, Augustus then drops off Hazel at her house and reveals that he had written his phone number in the exchanged book. After reading their books, Augustus sends four text mess... ... middle of paper ... ...ey are getting ready to bury the body; he is dressed in a white suit and drunk. She confronts him out of anger and plays mind games with her. After the conflict is resolved, she tells him to “go write another book.” Isaac tells Hazel that Augustus was writing something for her, and she searches for it at his house and comes up empty. She eventually e-mails Lidewij asking if Van Houten received anything from Augustus. After numerous back and forth between e-mails, Hazel learns that Augustus wanted Van Houten to write a eulogy for Hazel. Lidewij coerced Van Houten by using his dead daughter for emotional (forgot word). Van Houten reads the letters and forwards them back to Hazel with no additional words. The book ends with “You don’t get to choose if you hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes hers.”
