Throughout history women have been portrayed as inferior to men in all ages. However women have transcended from being too inferior to men to actually being portrayed as naive in the sense that women only care about their beauty since that is the only thing that society cares about now. This has now spread to age in society where now women are portrayed by the media as sex symbols so that could be enticing to society. In the “Fat Girl” by andre dubus the main charcter Louise is pressured by her family members espically her mother to lose weight so that she can fit into societies portrayal of women.In the poem “the barbie doll” by margie piercy the female charcter is forced to correct her body images in order to fit with that of which society …show more content…

Louise mother who is a conformer to this society forces louise to lose weight because “in five years you'll be in highschool and if you're fat the boys won't like you”;they won't ask you out”louise's mother believes that because she her daughter is fat then she will not be loved by anybody because “the boys won't like you if your fat” louise is also forced by her mother to not eat as much because she can't be fat so while her mother is outside smoking a cigarette “she would put a sandwich under her shirt and go outside or to the bathroom and eat it” this shows the type of pressure that is put on louise by her mother and her mother's views that louise can not be accepted in society because of her appearance. this further shows how idiotic and socially dependent of what society …show more content…

the poem then progresses to talking about how the baby when it grew up it was “was healthy,tested intelligent possessed strong arms and back … everyone saw a fat nose and fat legs” in this section of the poem we see how marge piercy tries to indicate that although this girl was “healthy, tested intelligent, possessed strong arms and back” that is not what society saw in her all they saw was “a fat nose and fat legs”. In order for this girl to feel as though she is able to be accepted in the society that she lives in she decided to “cut off her nose and her legs and offered them up…. doesn't she look pretty everyone said consummation at last”. this lastly proves the toll that society continues to have on people especially women the girl in this poem decide to mutilate herself so that she could be accepted into the society where at the end it says that “doesnt she look pretty everyone said consummation at last” this shows the sickness that is society in this
