The Fall, a movie produced in 2006, tells the story of Roy, a crippled stuntman and Alexandria, an inquisitive 5-year old girl. During Roy’s hospital stay, he befriends Alexandria and it is revealed, throughout the movie, that Roy suffered his injury performing a stunt that his colleagues deemed suicidal. While Roy is in his hospital bed, he starts concocting an insane and crazy story for Alexandria. The story consists of seven heroes who are on a quest that involve stealing and looting. Alexandria is a simple 5 year old girl, whose english is not so fluent. She is a little slow and doesn’t understand some of the words Roy uses. So, some of the missions Alexandria goes on for Roy, fall short of successful. Roy, who is clearly upset with this, takes his anger out on her. Whenever Alexandria makes a mistake, Roy decides to punish her. Mentally and psychologically. In the most diabolical way possible, Roy ruins the story that Alexandria is enchanted by. For each mistake Alexandria commits, Roy punishes her by punishing the characters of the story that Alexandria is in love with. It gets to such a point, that Alexandria has to take over the narration, in order to save herself psychologically and to save the characters of the story. So, in conclusion, one of the main themes of The Fall, is the idea of manipulation and duping characters in order to get what you want. We see this, multiple times, through Roy’s manipulative ways of tricking Alexandria into getting him what he wants. To begin with, Roy beings this crazy and elaborative story, only to convince Alexandria to be as cool as the bandits and heroes on the stories. Gone with the Wind is a classic fictional love story that depicts life in the old south before, during and after the Civil war. The book was originally written in 1936 by Margret Mitchell, the movie adaptation was released in 1939, directed by Victor Fleming, and staring Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. Ms. Mitchell grew up listening to Civil war stories from confederate veterans. It was reported that they told her everything; everything that is, except that they had lost the war, she found that out when she was 10 years old. Though the book was written 71 years after the Civil War ended, Ms. Mitchell did her research and appears to have drawn inspiration from those childhood stories that she was told. This is apparent in the detailed description of the clothing, houses, and everyday discussions and interactions of the characters throughout the book. Though not all historically correct most of what is in the book is accurate. During the time the movie was released, “damn” was considered to be vulgar and controversial and they used the term “darkies” to describe the slaves.

The film "Garden State" is an eccentric drama; in addition, a romance comedy, with a slew of complex, innate cast of characters, each deeply entrenched in profound emotional and psychological scars, ascending from the regrets of their past. The film is a reflection, on rediscovering yourself after years of goalless ambiguity. Writer/Director Zach Braff, stars as the films’ chief character, Andrew Largeman. In James Berardinelli’s movie review, he said: “Garden State is one of those movies that fails to stay with the viewer for an extended period of time. The movie I decided to analyze for this course was American History X (1998), which stars Edward Norton. Though this movie isn’t widely known, it is one of the more interesting movies I have seen. It’s probably one of the best films that depict the Neo Nazi plague on American culture. The film takes place from the mid to late 1990’s during the Internet boom, and touches on subjects from affirmative action to Rodney King. One of the highlights of this movie that really relates to one of the key aspects of this course is the deterrence of capital punishment. Edward Norton’s portrayal as the grief stricken older brother who turns to racist ideologies and violence to cope with his fathers death, completely disregards the consequences of his actions as he brutally murders someone in front of his family for trying to steal his car. The unstable mentality that he developed after his father’s death really goes hand-to-hand specifically with Isaac Ehrlich’s study of capital punishment and deterrence. Although this movie is entirely fictional, a lot of the central themes (racism, crime punishment, gang pervasiveness, and one’s own vulnerability) are accurate representations of the very problems that essentially afflict us as a society.
