The epic poem of Beowulf is a tale of bravery and devotion. Beowulf was a God fearing man and encouraged his men to be of the same, he fought bravely against many foes and won all but his last. The story of Beowulf is just that a story. It is not certain whether he really lived or not but the story of Beowulf came about shortly after Higlac led a military raid around the year 525. During the time period Beowulf was written, there were many epics being written about the same types of things. The Odyssey by Homer was another great fictional epic. Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet was a romantic epic written in this time. The story of Beowulf begins with a beast terrorizing a kingdom by killing many soldiers and people for over a decade. The news of the terror travels far and wide and so far that Beowulf hears of it. He organizes a party with his kings approval made up of the best of the best to assist him in his journey to Herot. Once in herot Beowulf and his men meet with king Hrothgar to get his blessings to defeat the beast named Grendel. After a great feast, like clockwork, grendel comes from the marsh to kill,only to be confronted by Beowulf. Once a great battle breaks out grendel realizes he has been defeated, he runs to his home where hell opens its arms to accept the dying beast.

After the death of the once great king and warrior, Wiglaf completes Beowulf’s last wish, for a tower to be built in his name so that sailors could see it and know his name. it took ten consecutive days and after the monument was built 12 of his bravest rode their horses around the tower telling the stories of the dead king and how great he was and how no other would amount to that of

    It is common opinion that Beowulf was written by a Christian poet. This was probably true because at the time when it was written, most of the few people who knew how to read and write were in the clergy. There are various references within the poem to elements of the Christian religion. However, the story is about Pagan people and certain aspects of their culture are even glorified. The ambiguity of Beowulf’s religious content has caused confusion as to what significance religion had in inspiring the author and in what manner the author meant to inspire or influence his audience. I do not think that Beowulf is a Christian allegory because Beowulf had very little in common with the Biblical figure of Jesus Christ. I think that religion was not the primary thematic concern of the writer. Although there are discrepancies between the two styles of thinking, Beowulf seems to praise values which were considered moral and good among all humanity, both Christian and Pagan.
