In the great country of the United States of America, there was a certain decade that changed the course of the nation tremendously. That was the 1920’s. The economy grew during this time and many people became rich very quickly. Large businesses developed which created jobs and many people had much more free time. Not as many people were farming and this made city life grow. As cities grew and people had more time to spend on various things, then the entertainment industry developed and increased. Hollywood started to take off and sports and many other sources of amusement had their beginning around this period. This age also had some issues that arose out of it. Al Capone was probably the most famous “Speakeasy” of this time with making around sixty million every year he was in business (“Prohibition” Prohibition). One of the most surprising criminals was George Cassidy. The reason why he was so surprising was because his clienteles were congressmen. He started making twenty five deliveries every day to the Senate and House of Representatives. He ran his bootlegging business with ease for five years then he got into law trouble and spent eighteen months in jail. In 1933 the 21st Amendment was created and it repealed the 18th Amendment (“Marula Facts”). The Great Depression was one of the factors that brought this to pass. Alcohol created jobs, which were scarce during the time of the Depression (“Marula Facts”). Though the Prohibition seemingly had a negative outcome, this event taught our country many things about itself and its people. It showed that our citizens recognized the issues that went on in America and attempted to resolve them for the better. Then it revealed that a large majority of people love money more than they desire to do what is right. This presented itself through the bootleggers to all of the police officers that accepted bribes and did not fulfill their jobs.
