English Renaissance The Renaissance was a very influential time period in England and the rest of Europe. This brought about many cultural advancements and new ideas. The Renaissance is a term that literally means “new birth.” This was the term that many Italian intellectuals used to describe the time period that they were in (Grendler). During this time period many artists and other successful people became famous. For example both William Shakespeare and Leonardo Da Vinci became well known, along with their famous works (Judkins). The English Renaissance was a great time in England when many new inventions were created, art and literature flourished, and philosophers began to seek out new knowledge to help advance society. During the “dark ages”, which was prior to the Renaissance, the only people that received any kind of education were wealthy land owners and royals. Even in the beginning of the Renaissance many average people did not know how to read or write. Philosophers during the Renaissance decided that in order to advance society majority of people needed to be educated and learn how to read and write (Guisepi). From the ideas of scholars and philosophers like Petrarch and Boccaccio, came the first official form of schooling and education (Guisepi). During this time was when humanists and humanism came about. “Humanism was the defining intellectual movement of the Renaissance. It was based on the belief that the literary, scientific, and philosophical works of ancient Greece and Rome provided the best guides for learning and living” (Grendler). A lot of the scholars from this era based the majority of their beliefs on humanist beliefs and parts of the bible. Humanism was put into schools curriculum’s to teach kids good character and prepare them to take an important position as a judge, teacher, or doctor in the future (Grendler).
