Did you know that video games can badly effect your life? Video games have been around since November 29, 1972 (Jeff Tyson 2000). Video games are fun and entertaining, but they could also badly effect people’s lives. The least of importance are the studies from Hope M. Cummings from the University of Michigan, and Elizabeth A. Vandewater from the University of Texas, that show video games can make people spend less time doing homework (2007). During the school year 2002-2003 they collected a survey from nearly 1,500 U.S. kids and teens from ages 10 to 19 (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). About 80 percent of the percentage were boys and more than 36 percent of the group reported playing video games (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). Adolescent gamers spent 30 percent less time reading and 34 percent less time doing homework compared to non-gamers (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). More than third of the nation’s children are overweight or obese according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Erica Loop 2011). Addicted gamers often confront this problem because they sit in one place and relaxing for a long time (Roy D’Silva 2012). Many health hazards can develop to addicted gamers (Roy D’Silva 2012). One of the many health hazards can be by playing video games throughout the night which can develop insomnia. (Roy D’Silva 2012). Another common health problem that addicted gamers face is that people can get back pains. (Roy D’Silva 2012). When I play video games for a long time I get bad headaches. The greatest of importance are the studies from the ISU Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Craig Anderson, that show video games that are violent can make people have violent behavior (2010). Anderson and his team tested the effects of violent video game play on the behaviors, thoughts, and feelings of the individuals by using meta-analytic procedure (2010). New longitudinal data which provided further confirmation that playing violent video games could make some people violent were included in the research (Iowa State University 2010). Anderson said that they were not huge effects but also not small ones (2010). Violent video game effects are significant in both Eastern and Western cultures in males and females, and in all age groups, which was the analysis of Anderson’s work (2010).
In a survey conducted by the Entertainment Software Association it was discovered that over half of Americans engage in digital games. In the past few years interactive electronic entertainment has grown from non existence to one of the most popular means of recreation. In an american home it is estimated that at least one member of the family is a dedicated gamer. The Entertainment Software Association also found that video games attract gamers of all ages and genders, so there is no longer a specific stereotype that can represent the gamer population (2). It was also found that the average gamer spends about forty hours a week solely on video games (Anderson and Bushman 353). In addition Emily Hughes stated from the Metrics 2.0 research that “the video game industry is a rapid-growing market...In 2013, the worldwide market volume totaled $93 billion” (n. pag.). This actuality that such an immense number of young children and adults are routinely playing video games makes understanding the effects of video games on players an important research objective. Both scientists and psychologists have recognized the increasing popularity of video games and have released numerous articles. Many parents come to the doctor with complaints that their child is growing obese by the day and not doing any physical activity. One of today’s most debated topics is whether violent video games cause bad behavior. This topic has been researched for almost 30 years and there are still major opinion differences. Many psychologists say violent video games do cause bad behavior, and claim that games such as Manhunt, Grand Theft Auto, and Modern Warfare, desensitize people to violence, making it a norm in society. Others disagree, claiming that these games, although they can be very violent, can help people develop critical thinking skills. (Nonviolent video games are preferred for this though). The truth is, violent video games do both; studies indicated that some games increase aggressive thought, feelings and behaviors in both the long and short term. But, studies also show that some benefits include visual attention to the periphery of a computer screen, improve adults contrast sensitivity, and some games require team work, which helps develop collaboration skills.

This is gradually becoming a big problem because in video games, the gamer is an active participant, sitting in front of the screen and watching and playing something real.
Children who play video games often without being watched by parents forget about their homework and start to fail classes. Children get distracted fairly easy when it comes to the simplest things, such as video games. They can even lose track of time and stay up too late playing these games, then there becomes a pattern of falling asleep in class. Falling asleep in class and failing tests show a reduced academic performance in children. Video games with aggressive behavior also teach children to become disrespectful. Children who pick up on this habit start to do poorly in school because they are too busy becoming a trouble maker and disturbing others during class time.
