The Effect of Weight on Sliding Friction Between a Block and Surface

In this investigation we are going to find out what effect weight has
on sliding friction. Friction is the force that is between two objects
that are in contact with each other. The force is always present even
though people only think it is there when the object is moving.
Leonardo da Vinci was one of the first people to experiment with the
idea of friction. He came up with two types of friction; static
friction, which is the friction, which is present when the object is
stationary and kinetic friction, this type of friction is present when
the object is moving. Static friction is greater than kinetic
friction. Kinetic friction is the type we are going to be
investigating. Kinetic friction occurs when the surfaces of the two
objects move against each other. Even if the surface appears
completely smooth there will always be minute bumps and lumps on it.
The lumps on the one surface move against the lumps on the other
surface and produce the force of friction.
I predict that in this experiment if you double the weight the
friction on the object will also double. I have based this prediction
on the formula shown below.

This formula shows that the force of friction is proportional to the
original force/ weight of the object. The formula is the work of
Leonardo da Vinci. He said
"Friction produces double the amount of effort if the weight is
doubled."
This should be because if the force on an object is increased then the
forced needed to move it would also have to increase.
In this experiment I will make sure that I keep everything the same
except the weight of the block, as the weight is my variable. The
things that I must keep the same are:

Gravity is the force that holds the skier to the ground and is also what pulls the skier down the hill. While gravity is acting straight down on the skier, a normal force is exerted on the skier that opposes gravity. As the skier skis down the hill, he or she will encounter an acceleration. This acceleration is due to gravity caused by a change in the skiers velocity. The mass of a skier is different for every person and is easily calculated by multiplying a skiers weight in kilograms by the gravitational force exerted by the earth. These forces and more are explained throughout the rest of this paper.

In his short story “The Use of Force,” Williams Carlos Williams puts a bad taste in your mouth about how the doctor acts towards the little girl known as Mathilda. He actively grasps her jaw, holds her down, and ends up making her mouth bleed. When people read this story for the first time, they could see the doctor as a cruel person who does not care for the well-being of children, or even that he does not like children and wants to hurt them. However, I believe that the doctor is justified in his actions of force and should be commended for his successful diagnosis.
The term biomechanics means the study of the structure and function of biological systems using the methods of mechanics. Biomechanics studies the process of kinematics and develops artificial limbs and footwear specifically to aid the body in performance. The study of biomechanics also includes the stress testing on crash dummies in car accidents and any sport where stress is placed on the body in order to produce performance. The type of stress specifically is the joint stimulation and bone modeling stress.
In the experiment these materials were used in the following ways. A piece of Veneer wood was used as the surface to pull the object over. Placed on top of this was a rectangular wood block weighing 0.148-kg (1.45 N/ 9.80 m/s/s). A string was attached to the wood block and then a loop was made at the end of the string so a Newton scale could be attached to determine the force. The block was placed on the Veneer and drug for about 0.6 m at a constant speed to determine the force needed to pull the block at a constant speed. The first one we used was Converting potential energy to kinetic energy. The Mousetrap is a example of converting potential energy to kinetic energy. The spring of the mousetrap is held back with a bunch of potential energy and once released, snaps forward in a burst of kinetic energy. Releasing the axle also releases the spring, converting potential energy into kinetic energy. The spring pulls the ribbon and unwinds it from the front axle, making the axle spin and pull the rest of the car along. The second concept we used was Newton's First Law which is an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. The way we used this law in our presentation was that whenever the car wasn’t moving, it was at rest. Whenever the car was in motion it stayed in motion until forces started to act on it and slow it down. Therefore friction was our third concept. The force that slows down the car. And lastly we used momentum. When the string is released and the car starts moving it has more momentum at the beginning than it has near the end when friction starts to happen and slow the car down. The first law, an object in motion will stay in motion until another force is acted upon it, let’s the designers know that the roller coaster will not start with a specific amount of force. Some rollercoasters use engines, steep downhills, etc. The second law, that states that the net force of an object is equal to the product of its acceleration and mass, helps roller coaster designers know how to calculate the net force of the coaster. The third law, which states that every action has it’s own opposite reaction, explains why if the tires of the roller coaster pushes against the track while the track pushes back on the tires pushes the roller coaster to keep going.

What type of ski wax will reduce the friction between ski bases and snow the best: rub on, paste, spray on, or hot. Skis slide because when pressure is applied to the snow it creates a thin layer of water in between the ski bases and the snow. Furthermore, skis repel water causing them to slide instead of sticking to the snow. If ski wax is applied by rubbing, pasting, spraying, melting, then melt on wax will reduce the most friction because it coats the skis more evenly, fills in small imperfections and provides a thicker protective barrier.

Research Question How does the height of the drop affect the depth of the sand? Hypothesis As the height of the drop for the ball increases, the measured depth of the sand will increase. This is because the ball will have more time to accelerate at 9.8ms-¹, and therefore have more momentum, creating a larger impact on the sand each time the height of the drop is raised.
