Homeless in Hawai’i

As you drive through popular areas of ‘Oahu such as Kaka’ako, you will notice the vast amount of homeless communities set up in parks and along the sidewalks. There are many areas on this island that have a homeless issue, causing many to agree that “Hawaii has the highest homeless per capita rate in the nation” (Ako, Loraine.) As small as the Hawaiian islands are, this statement reigns true. Even with all of the islands combined, it still would be considered the smallest state. With a population of 1.4 million individuals, it has been discovered that 7% of the population is homeless. Few of the driving causes behind homelessness in Hawaii are caused by the mainland. Many homeless individuals have been given a oneway ticket to the island of ‘Oahu, due to better living conditions in Hawai’i. Detective Micheal Fisher stated that “Numerous of the homeless individuals that I have arrested over the past twenty-seven years have claimed that they were given a one-way ticket to the island of ‘Oahu due to better weather conditions.” Due to this issue the government has been working on a funding project to send homeless individuals back to the mainland. The government has attempted to enforce certain types of laws that do not allow homeless people to plant themselves in certain areas not the island. There are numerous homeless shelters that have been constructed in various parts of ‘Oahu island. Many individuals choose to not enter these shelters. Mostly because they do not want to follow shelter rules. Such as the no drug rules and the curfews. From personal experience I have volunteered for both homeless shelters and people living on the streets. At the shelters, I have met some incredible people with amazing stories. Some of these people have three jobs and are trying to get themselves and their families out of their current situation. There have been many individuals that I have spoken to whom have said that they have chosen this type of lifestyle, of living on the streets. Few have even mentioned that they love their lifestyle because they don’t have to pay taxes. For those who actually do this trying to beat the system it is incredibly unfortunate for those who actually pay taxes and do what they can to pay for living costs on this
