The Documentary: Tricked: Causes Of Human Trafficking

2011 Words5 Pages

The documentary “Tricked” was very difficult to watch but it was obligatory that we do because we need to see the reality of human trafficking. It really exposed what the victims of human trafficking go through everyday. The fact that they also interviewed different pimps and showed us how they operate is very important since it gave us a deeper understanding on how they choose their victims and get them to stay. In this paper, not only will I talk about what I learned about human trafficking throughout the semester in, and from reading The Slave Across the Street, The Slave Next door, Half the Sky and listening to Heidi’s presentation; I will also talk about what I believe is the best way to fight human trafficking and why. One of the causes of human trafficking emphasized in the documentary “Tricked” are the pimps and johns. They interviewed different pimps and showed us how they operate which is very important because it gave us a deeper understanding on how they choose their victims and manipulate them into staying. They also interviewed the johns and they gave us their perspective as well. As I watched the documentary I have come to a conclusion that the real root of the problem are the johns and the pimps. The johns demand for sex and the pimps provide it. They are both to blame for what the girls are going through. Without pimps there would not be any girls to sell and without johns, there would not be anyone to pay for sex from the pimps. In The Slave Next Door, they said that “it is obvious that without the demand for the sexual services of women and young girls, there would be no need to write this chapter. Yet the demand exists, and it is vast” (Bales & Soodalter, 2010). This essentially tells us that the reason human trafficking is happening is because of the massive demand for sex and the johns are the ones demanding it. To fight human trafficking more successfully, we should focus more on the root of this horrific phenomenon. Helping the victims is essential and effective but that will not stop the problem. As long as there are pimps and johns out there we will …show more content…

During Heidi’s presentation in class, I even asked her and she did agree with me. She works as a nurse but she also helps the victims in court by providing evidence to persecute the johns and she believes that persecuting the johns is fundamental. In The Slave Next Door, they also revealed the fact that the johns are usually not penalized by saying that “meanwhile, the police generally don’t pursue the johns at all, and when they find him at the scene they will usually let him go. It is different for the woman or child he’s been abusing. Trafficking victim or not, child or adult, she is likely to be arrested, while the john goes home to his wife and kids-a little shaky but none worse for wear. And the pimp who put that woman or child on the street has become one of the new heroes of American popular culture” (Bales and Soodalter). This quote from the book perfectly describe what happens to the johns most of the time. It is really sad because the victims are the ones that are arrested and not the johns. This encourages the johns to do it again if they have the chance to because they are not persecuted for what they have done so next time; they will do it again. They will use another girl for their own sexual desires and the more they do it, the less they care about these girls. According to Rachel Lloyd from The Slave Next Door, “There seems to be an unspoken understanding that men have the right to
