Displaced Persons Camps
The Soviets made it possible for Jews to rebuild their lives and move on from the terrible memories they had during Concentration Camps.They made Displaced Persons Camps to put the Jews until they were ready and strong enough to go back home to start over.The Displaced Persons Camps, while not without their problems, did provide a place for Jews to gain back their lives after the Holocaust while the world decided how to assist them. The Soviets were the Jewish peoples savior to begin their new lives.
The Camps
The camps were a nirvana and a necessity for Holocaust survivors.

During their takeover, The soviets found remainings of some of the victims like “more than 800,000 womens outfits, hundreds of mens suits, and 14,000 pounds of human hair.”(The Holocaust Chronicle) Concentration camps were liberated in Northern Germany by the British Forces. Close to seven to Nine million jews were taken from their homes. (Texas Holocaust M.) During liberation few DPs died from “exhaustion, disease, and shock of eating food.”(Texas Holocaust M.) January 27,1945-1,500,000 were murdered, and 2,000,000 were liberated in Auschwitz..(The History Place) Over 200,000 were liberated at Buchenwald by American forces.(Holocaust Museum)

The DP camps were a great place for all the unwanted people to go because they were accepted there. This situation can apply to many people, have you ever been in a situation so bad you couldn’t do nothing about it? Until one day someone decided that they need to stand up and do something about it. Thats how it was for the Jews they got split from family, all their belongings and dignity were stolen by germans just because of their race. My topic is very important part of the Holocaust because it showed that people cared to stop the terrible things the Germans were doing. The DP Camps need to be remembered because without the camps the Jews wouldn’t of gotten the help that they got.The DP Camps helped Jews to rebuild their lives and get their family’s back.

The Holocaust will forever be known as one of the largest genocides ever recorded in history. 11 million perished, and 6 million of the departed were Jewish. The concentration camps where the prisoners were held were considered to be the closest one could get to a living hell. There is no surprise that the men, women, and children there were afraid. One is considered blessed to have a family member alongside oneself.
“By the end of 1942, over a million Soviet Jews died” (USHMM). This is a very large number of people to die in only half a year. During the summer of 1942, 137,346 Jews were killed, according to S.S. Karl Jaegers report. Almost all Jews in small towns in Lithuania are killed. 35,000 survivors are put into forced labor (USHMM).
The expropriation of the Jewish people began with the confiscation of the Jewish wealth, the removal of Jewish property, the registration of all assert, and the inability of Jews to own home property. After the Jew was sent off people moved into their homes and took over their business. Between 1933 and 1939, 80% of the Jewish properties were seized, 50% of Jewish businesses were closed and 50% of Jews was displaced. In 1942 Roosevelt signed the Executive order 9066 which forced all Japanese-Americans to evacuate the West Coast. They were forced out no matter their loyalty or their citizenship. These Japanese-Americans were sent to Internment camps which were located in California, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arkansas. There were ten camps all-together and 120,000 people filled them (2009). The immigrants were deprived of their traditional respect when their children who were American-born were indorsed authority positions within the camps. In 1945 Japanese-American citizens with undisrupted loyalty were allowed to return to the West Coast, but not until 1946 was the last camp closed.
Holocaust Facts The Holocaust has many reasons for it. Some peoples’ questions are never answered about the Holocaust, and some answers are. The Holocaust killed over 6 million Jews (Byers.p.10.) Over 1.5 million children (Byers, p. 10). They were all sent to concentration camps to do hard labor work.
They were stripped of their political rights and taken from their homes and friends with limited to no warning and uncertain what was next to come. An abundance of people were forced to one of the thousands of concentrations camps where they were separated from their families and directed to either a labor camp, where many would suffer, or to a death camp, where were they would unfortunately be executed immediately. In 1933, Hitler finally was named Chancellor of Germany and began to organize what he called the “Final Solution” (Balson). He and his Nazi party believed Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and the mentally ill were violating racial purity in Europe and devised a way to slowly kill them off and remove them from Germany and the rest of the world (Balson). Many people know and understand the events occurring during the Holocaust, but they probably don’t realize there was a plethora of steps in setting up concentration camps, persecuting the targeted groups, and keeping Hitler’s and the Nazis’ intentions a secret.
We need to remember the Holocaust because of all the Jewish people who died and the people who tried to save them. In the book “Book Thief”, the family risked their lives to help one of their friends who was Jewish. If the Nazis found out about the Jewish person in their basement they would take the whole family to the death camp with the Jewish friend. Also in the “Boys who challenged Hitler”, a group of boys who lived in Denmark, risked their Life’s to save Jewish people by putting them on rafts to float over to Sweden. They did that because Sweden was a free country and the Nazi’s did not have control over them.
Only 7,000 emaciated survivors of a Nazi extermination process that killed an estimated six million Jews were found at Auschwitz” (Rice, Earle). Most of these deaths occurred towards the end of the war; however, there were still a lot of lives that had been miraculously spared. “According to SS reports, there were more than 700,000 prisoners left in the camps in January 1945. It has been estimated that nearly half of the total number of concentration camp deaths between 1933 and 1945 occurred during the last year of the war” (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). The Holocaust was one of the most tragic events in the world’s history.
The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Many Americans were afraid of another attack, so the state representatives pressured President Roosevelt to do something about the Japanese who were living in the United States at the time. President Roosevelt authorized the internment with Executive Order 9066 which allowed local military commanders to designate military areas as exclusion zones, from which any or all persons may be excluded. Twelve days later, this was used to declare that all people of Japanese ancestry were excluded from the entire Pacific coast. This included all of California and most of Oregon and Washington.
To begin with the holocaust had a great impact in history even though it was a time of disaster, murder, and discrimination. It was a time in which Adolf Hitler,German politician and Nazi party leader, wanted all Jews suffering or dead. Adolf Hitler turned everyone against the Jews because he believed that they were to wealthy and too powerful so he wanted to eliminate all of them. The Jews went through a lot of suffering and pain. The German soldiers which took commands from their leader, Adolf Hitler, put some Jews to work and killed others. Many Jews didn't get to work they were killed instantly. All women were separated from the man and woman were mostly killed instantly only some got the opportunity to work. The some ways that the jews were killed is that they were put into gas chambers by tons or shot by soldiers. Jews were also dying by starvation dehydration soldiers would not give them enough food or water. They would only want those with blue eyes and blonde hair they discriminated all the others. Soldiers would not only kill the Jews but torture them for anything they did. The Jews would be transported from camp to camp walking even in the worst weather conditions which also many died from it.
The Holocaust was a horrible time for everyone involved, but for the Jews it was the worst. The Jews no longer had names they became numbers. Also they would fight and the S.S. would watch and enjoy. They lost all personal items, then forced to look and dress the same. This was an extremely painful and agonizing process to dehumanize the Jews. Which made it easier to take control of the Jews and get rid of them.
World War II was a time of deliberate hate among groups of innocent people who were used as scapegoats. Japanese-Americans were persecuted due to the fact that they looked like citizens of Japan, who had attacked the United States on December 7th, 1941 at the naval base, Pearl Harbor. This hatred toward the group was due to newspapers creating a scare for the American people, as well as the government restricting the rights of Japanese-Americans. The Japanese-Americans were mistreated during World War II for no other reason than being different. These men, women, and children were loathed by the American public for looking like the people of the Japanese army that had attacked the United States. These people were only hated by association, even though many had come to the United States to create a better life for their family.
During the Holocaust the Jewish people and other prisoners in the camps had to face many issues. The Holocaust started in 1933 and finally ended in 1945. During these 12 years all kinds of people in Europe and many other places had so many different problems to suffer through. These people were starved, attacked, and transported like they were animals.
The Holocaust was one of the most tragic and trying times for the Jewish people. Hundreds of thousands of Jews and other minorities that the Nazis considered undesirable were detained in concentration camps, death camps, or labor camps. There, they were forced to work and live in the harshest of conditions, starved, and brutally murdered.
